The aim of this review was to proffer an evidence-based scientific account of the effectiveness of contemporary surgical procedures in the management of malunited calcaneal fractures after initial conservative management. This systematic review included studies that evaluated the surgical procedures in the management of calcaneal malunion and systematically searched studies published between January 2005 and June 2016.

Background: Dorsal closing wedge calcaneal osteotomy is a technique for the treatment of Haglund's triad, which is considered a safe procedure with good results. However, one of the complications that could lead to revision operation is the nonunion of the osteotomy and failure of osteosynthesis. This is attributed to instability of the osteotomy site and proximal migration of the posterior calcaneal process due to breakage of plantar bone-bridge at the apex of the wedge osteotomy.

The techniques for performing percutaneous osteotomies in treating deformities of the foot in children are presented along with a detailed description of the operative details. The author's use of minimal-access surgery for tibial, os calcis, and midfoot osteotomies is described using a cooled side-cutting burr that has not previously been described for use in the child's foot. The cancellous nature of the bones in the child are easily cut with the burr and the adjacent soft tissues are not damaged.
