On the basis of a longitudinal study of growth in French children, we attempted to find a valid index for estimating adiposity, and to specify the optimal conditions for its use. The Quetelet index was found suitable for application to children, but as with all methods, a certain lack of precision proved unavoidable because of the different stages of growth observed at a given age. For use by clinicians, we provide charts, based on the Quetelet index and on age, permitting estimation of adiposity in any child on the basis of longitudinal study measurements. For use by epidemiologists, we give standard values for studying groups of subjects, even when a reference population is not available. Body adiposity may be expressed independently of age and sex.

This paper critically examines the scientific and ethical underpinnings of gender-affirming care, particularly for minors. While major medical organizations endorse such interventions as medically necessary, the evidence supporting their long-term safety and efficacy remains limited. Research into hormonal, neuroanatomic, and genetic influences reveals a strong biological basis for gender identity, challenging social constructionist arguments.

Maximizing the translational potential of neurophysiology in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: a study on compound muscle action potentials.

Amyotroph Lateral Scler Frontotemporal Degener

January 2025

Department of Neuroscience, Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN), The University of Sheffield, Sheffield, UK and.

Mouse models of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) enable testing of novel therapeutic interventions. However, treatments that have extended survival in mice have often failed to translate into human benefit in clinical trials. Compound muscle action potentials (CMAPs) are a simple neurophysiological test that measures the summation of muscle fiber depolarization in response to maximal stimulation of the innervating nerve.

Objective: As the population ages, understanding the association between sleep patterns and physical frailty in older adults is crucial for formulating effective health interventions. This study aimed to explore the relationship among nap time, nighttime sleep duration, and physical frailty in older Chinese individuals; establish recommended sleep times; and provide a scientific and reasonable basis for the prevention and management of frailty in older adults.

Methods: On the basis of the 2020 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study database, demographic information, health data, and lifestyle information of the research subjects were obtained.

Reward Decision Network Disconnection in Poststroke Apathy: A Prospective Multimodality Imaging Study.

Hum Brain Mapp

February 2025

Department of Neurology, Centre for Leading Medicine and Advanced Technologies of IHM, the First Affiliated Hospital of USTC, Division of Life Sciences and Medicine, University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei, Anhui, China.

Apathy is a common neuropsychiatric symptom following stroke, characterized by reduced goal-directed behavior. The reward decision network (RDN), which plays a crucial role in regulating goal-directed behaviors, is closely associated with apathy. However, the relationship between poststroke apathy (PSA) and RDN dysfunction remains unclear due to apathy heterogeneity, the confounding effect of depression and individual variability in lesion impacts.

Objective: To explore the relationship between triglyceride glucose (TyG) and the obesity combined indexes and the occurrence of multiple chronic diseases (MCD), which will help to provide a basis for the prevention and treatment of this condition.

Methods: 3037 participants in the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, which was conducted from 2011 to 2015 were selected for this study. They were divided into four groups (Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4) based on the quartiles of TyG, TyG-BMI, TyGWC and TyGWHtR in the baseline data.
