Neutron activation analysis was employed to determine total body calcium in C3H/St (Ha) female mice. Ninty-nine percent of total body calcium is in bone and loss of calcium was used as an index of osteoporosis. Heparin (500 U/kg B.I.D.) treatment for three months resulted in significant osteoporosis. Both human and salmon calcitonin (4 MRC U/Kg B.I.D.) prevented heparin induced osteoporosis. The results suggest that calcitonin may prevent pathological fractures in patients on anticoagulants and other osteoporosis inducing regimens.

Unlabelled: This study compared denosumab and zoledronic acid for treating osteoporosis in drug-naïve postmenopausal Korean women. Over 3 years, both drugs significantly increased bone mineral density. However, denosumab also improved fat-free mass, suggesting it may be a better initial treatment for osteoporosis with low muscle mass, assuming all other conditions remain constant.

As humans age, they experience deformity and a decrease in their bone strength, such brittleness in the bones ultimately lead to bone fracture. Magnetic field exposure combined with physical exercise may be useful in mitigating age-related bone loss by improving the canalicular fluid motion within the bone's lacuno-canalicular system (LCS). Nevertheless, an adequate amount of fluid induced shear stress is necessary for the bone mechano-transduction and solute transport in the case of brittle bone diseases.

Bone remodeling is a continuous cyclic process that maintains and regulates bone structure and strength. The disturbance of bone remodeling leads to a series of bone metabolic diseases. Recent studies have shown that citrate, an intermediate metabolite of the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, plays an important role in bone remodeling.

Background: Mendelian randomization is believed to attenuate the biases inherent in observational studies, yet a meta-analysis of Mendelian randomization studies in osteoporosis has not been conducted thus far. This study aims to evaluate the connection between potential causal factors and the risk of osteoporosis by synthesizing evidence from Mendelian randomization studies.
Methods: The databases PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase were systematically searched for Mendelian randomization studies investigating factors influencing osteoporosis up to May 2024.
