Interaction of liposomes with BLM is confirmed to consist of two stages. The first stage is a semi-fusion of liposomes with BLM. On this stage the bilayer in a contact area is formed of one liposome monolayer and another one of BLM. The second stage is inclusion of liposome bilayers into BLM; it occurs some tens of minutes after the first one. It occurs either by fusion or incorporation. The fusion to incorporation ratio increases with temperature. Liposomes are incorporated in BLM asymmetrically: the contact area of the liposome bilayer is always smaller than the free one.

Modification of Liposomal Properties by an Engineered Gemini Surfactant.

Department of Physics, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia 24061, United States.

Lipid membranes form the primary structure of cell membranes and serve as configurable interfaces across numerous applications including biosensing technologies, antifungal treatments, and therapeutic platforms. Therefore, the modification of lipid membranes by additives has important consequences in both biological processes and practical applications. In this study, we investigated a nicotinic-acid-based gemini surfactant (NAGS) as a chemically tunable molecular additive for modulating the structure and phase behavior of liposomal membranes.

Artificial peptides P4, A1 and A4 are homologous to amphipathic α-helical fragments of the influenza virus M1 protein. P4 and A4 contain the cholesterol recognition sequence CARC, which is absent in A1. As shown previously, P4 and A4 but not A1 have cytotoxic effects on some eukaryotic and bacterial cells.

Nanotherapeutics for Meningitis: Enhancing Drug Delivery Across the Blood-Brain Barrier.

Biomimetics (Basel)

January 2025

GloNeuro, Sector 107, Vishwakarma Road, Noida 201301, Uttar Pradesh, India.

Meningitis is the acute or chronic inflammation of the protective membranes, surrounding the brain and spinal cord, and this inflammatory process spreads throughout the subarachnoid space. The traditional drug delivery methods pose a disadvantage in limiting the capacity of crossing the blood-brain barrier (BBB) to reach the central nervous system (CNS). Hence, it is imperative to develop novel approaches that can overcome these constraints and offer efficient therapy for meningitis.

Background: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is characterized by abnormal bone formation outside the skeleton following injury or inherited disease, leading to limb dysfunction and neurological deficits. Current treatment options for HO are largely ineffective.

Methods: A network pharmacological analysis was conducted to identify the active ingredients and protein targets in Astragalus and Cinnamon Twig Five-Substance Decoction (ACTFSD) on HO.
