Designing asymmetrical structures is an effective strategy to optimize metallic catalysts for electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reactions. Herein, we demonstrate a transient pulsed discharge method for instantaneously constructing graphene-aerogel supports asymmetric copper nanocluster catalysts. This process induces the convergence of copper atoms decomposed by copper chloride onto graphene originating from the intense current pulse and high temperature.

Article Synopsis
  • Laser-structuring techniques, particularly Direct Laser Interference Patterning, can significantly enhance the performance of pure Ni electrodes in water electrolysis by optimizing their structure.
  • A study revealed that the spatial distance between laser-structures is critical for improving electrode performance, resulting in an increase in the electrochemically active surface area by up to 12 times compared to nonstructured electrodes.
  • Optimal structuring leads to lower onset potential and overpotential during the oxygen evolution reaction due to the superhydrophilic surface, which enhances bubble growth dynamics and minimizes electrode resistance.

Unique hierarchical NiFe-LDH/Ni/NiCoS heterostructure arrays on nickel foam for the improvement of overall water splitting activity.

Nanoscale

January 2025

Chongqing Key Laboratory of Inorganic Functional Materials, College of Chemistry, Chongqing Normal University, Chongqing, 401331, PR China.

The development of environmentally friendly, high-efficiency, stable, earth-abundant and non-precious metal-based electrocatalysts with fast kinetics and low overpotential for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is of exceeding significance but still challenging. Herein, a bifunctional electrode of unique hierarchical NiFe-LDH/Ni/NiCoS/NF (NiFe-LDH = nickel-iron layered double hydroxide and NF = nickel foam) electrocatalytic architecture, which is built up from NiFe-LDH nanosheets, Ni nanoparticles and NiCoS nanoneedles sequentially arrayed on a porous NF substrate, has been prepared by a facile hydrothermal and electrodeposition method. This electrocatalytic architecture is binder-free and its outer NiFe-LDH nanosheets can effectively prevent the oxidation of inner Ni nanoparticles and corrosion of NiCoS nanoneedles during water electrolysis.

Volatile Resistive Switching and Short-Term Synaptic Plasticity in a Ferroelectric-Modulated SrFeO Memristor.

SrFeO (SFO) offers a topotactic phase transformation between an insulating brownmillerite SrFeO (BM-SFO) phase and a conductive perovskite SrFeO (PV-SFO) phase, making it a competitive candidate for use in resistive memory and neuromorphic computing. However, most of existing SFO-based memristors are nonvolatile devices which struggle to achieve short-term synaptic plasticity (STP). To address this issue and realize STP, we propose to leverage ferroelectric polarization to effectively draw ions across the interface so that the PV-SFO conductive filaments (CFs) can be ruptured in absence of an external field.

School of Materials Science and Engineering, Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Chemical Energy Storage and Novel Cell Technology, Qilu University of Technology (Shandong Academy of Sciences), Jinan 250353, PR China. Electronic address:

The development of earth-abundant oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts with high activity and durability is critical for replacing noble-metal-based catalysts in the applications of scalable water electrolysis. A freestanding electrode architecture offers significant advantages over conventional coated powder forms due to enhanced kinetics and stability. However, precise control over electrode composition and the construction of uniformly distributed active sites within these electrodes remain challenging.
