A survey of the capacity of erythrocyte suspensions to handle a standard hydrogen peroxide oxidative load was made in a population of white male hospitalized alcoholics and non-hospitalized, non-alcoholic subjects. As measured by malondialdehyde (MDA) production, the capacity to handle this oxidation load was decreased in a significant percentage of individuals with a positive family history of alcoholism and who have experienced problems with alcohol sufficient to produce cytopathological changes and to require hospitalization.

Pancreatic pseudocysts are a complication of both acute and chronic pancreatitis that usually develop four to six weeks from the onset of pancreatitis. Alcoholic pancreatitis is the most important risk factor for developing such cysts, although non-alcoholic cases do also occur. This is the case of a 58-year-old male patient who presented to our emergency department with a two-day history of abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and inability to tolerate oral food and liquids.

Background: Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in patatin-like phospholipase domain-containing protein 3 (PNPLA3), transmembrane 6 superfamily member 2 (TM6SF2) and membrane bound O-acyltransferase domain containing 7 (MBOAT7) genes were reported to be strongly associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) pathogenicity among different populations. We investigated whether these SNPs are associated with prognostic factors and genetic biomarkers of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in the Sri Lankan context.
Methods: We conducted an exploratory study to evaluate the prevalence of five SNPs (PNPLA3 rs738409, PNPLA3 rs2281135, PNPLA3 rs2294918, TM6SF2 rs58542926 and MBOAT7 rs641738) as genetic risk factors for NASH-HCC pathogenicity.

Three-dimensional shear wave absolute vibro-elastography (S-WAVE) is a steady-state, volumetric elastography imaging technique similar to magnetic resonance elastography (MRE), with the additional advantage of multifrequency imaging and a significantly shorter examination time. We present a novel ultrasound matrix array implementation of S-WAVE for high-volume refresh rate acquisition. This new imaging setup is equipped with real-time shear wave monitoring for an improved data collection workflow and image quality.
