AI Article Synopsis

  • The study assessed the performance intensity-phonetically balanced (PI-PB) and performance intensity-synthetic sentence identification (PI-SSI) functions in 62 elderly patients with hearing loss (presbyacusis).
  • A significant finding was that 58 out of 100 ears showed central patterning in their auditory processing, suggesting difficulties in the brain's interpretation of sounds rather than just peripheral hearing loss.
  • The research highlights two key central patterns and discusses how these findings can inform clinical practices in evaluating hearing abilities of older adults.

Article Abstract

The performance intensity-phonetically balanced (PI-PB) and performance intensity-synthetic sentence identification (PI-SSI) functions were determined for 62 elderly patients (100 ears) with presbyacusis. A comparison of these functions was performed to determine whether patients older than 60 years exhibited peripheral or central PI-PB/PI-SSI patterning. Fifty-eight ears of the 100 ears examined showed central patterning. Furthermore, two diagnostically important central patterns were identified. The implications of the current data as well as the clinical application of PI-PB/PI-SSI testing for the evaluation of peripheral and central auditory effects in aged listeners are described.

Background: Fibrotic types of interstitial lung abnormalities seen on high-resolution computed tomography scans, characterised by traction bronchiolectasis/bronchiectasis with or without honeycombing, are predictors of progression and poor prognostic factors of interstitial lung abnormalities. There are no reports on the clinical characteristics of fibrotic interstitial lung abnormalities on high-resolution computed tomography scans. Therefore, we aimed to examine these clinical characteristics and clarify the predictive factors of fibrotic interstitial lung abnormalities on high-resolution computed tomography scans.

Background: This qualitative evaluation was embedded in the Rehabilitation Exercise and psycholoGical support After COVID-19 InfectioN (REGAIN) study, a randomised controlled trial (RCT) for those with post-COVID-19 condition ('long COVID') after hospital admission for COVID-19, comparing weekly home-based, live online supervised group exercise and psychological support sessions with 'best practice usual care' (a single session of advice).

Objective: To increase our understanding of how and why the REGAIN programme might have worked and what helped or hindered this intervention.

Design: A qualitative evaluation which utilised interviews with participants and practitioners delivering the intervention.

Background: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) significantly impacts post-injury quality of life; however, many injured patients struggle to access necessary psychosocial care. A brief intervention, Talk, Listen, Communicate to Recover (TLC to Recover), may facilitate access to psychosocial care in low resource trauma centers.

Objective: This study assessed staff and patient perceptions regarding the feasibility and acceptability of implementing TLC to Recover at a Level I trauma center.

Pitch perception in school-aged children: Pure tones, resolved and unresolved harmonics.

JASA Express Lett

January 2025

Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington 98103, USA.

Pitch perception affects children's ability to perceive speech, appreciate music, and learn in noisy environments, such as their classrooms. Here, we investigated pitch perception for pure tones as well as resolved and unresolved complex tones with a fundamental frequency of 400 Hz in 8- to 11-year-old children and adults. Pitch perception in children was better for resolved relative to unresolved complex tones, consistent with adults.
