Recapitulation of physiologic and pathophysiologic pulsatile CSF flow in purpose-built high-throughput hydrocephalus bioreactors.

December 2024

Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, Wayne State University, 6135 Woodward Avenue, Rm 1413, Detroit, MI, 48202, USA.

Background: Hydrocephalus, an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the ventricles of the brain, is often treated via a shunt system to divert the excess CSF to a different compartment; if left untreated, it can lead to serious complications and permanent brain damage. It is estimated that one in every 500 people are born with hydrocephalus. Despite more than 60 years of concerted efforts, shunts still have the highest failure rate of any neurological device requiring follow-up shunt revision surgeries and contributing to the $2 billion cost of hydrocephalus care in the US alone.

Background: Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is a common disease with a high prevalence. Incompetent venous valves are considered as one of the main causes. Besides compression therapy, various surgical therapies are practiced, whereby the reconstruction of valves is of central importance.

Coronary artery disease remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide despite advancements in percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). With an increasing ageing population, there is a significant challenge in addressing severe calcification in atherosclerotic plaque during angioplasty. This review article focuses on atherectomy strategies such as rotational atherectomy (RA), orbital atherectomy (OA) and excimer laser coronary angioplasty (ELCA) aimed at modifying calcified lesions and improving PCI outcomes.

Unlabelled: is to assess protective capabilities of the polymer coating made of polyvinyl alcohol to prevent leukocyte adhesion to epoxy-treated bovine pericardium, which is used in production of bioprosthetic heart valves.

Materials And Methods: Fragments of unmodified (control) and modified with polyvinyl alcohol epoxy-treated bovine pericardium were incubated in the dedicated chambers connected to a pulsatile flow system (Ibidi GmbH, Germany). During 48 h incubation was conducted in whole donor plasma containing 310 of mononuclear fraction cells.

Article Synopsis
  • - Hemorrhage is the main cause of preventable death in trauma situations, leading to military and civilian advancements in medical practices, particularly through the use of tourniquets to manage extremity bleeding and save lives.
  • - While tourniquets have significantly decreased deaths from bleeding in military settings, noncompressible hemorrhage still poses a major risk, especially before patients receive definitive medical care.
  • - The study explores using a small, disposable pressure monitor during resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) to enhance blood pressure monitoring, facilitate better resuscitation practices, and reduce the need for blood products in extreme environments.
