Nitric oxide-sensitive guanylyl cyclase (NO-GC) is a heterodimeric enzyme with an α- and a β-subunit. In its active form as an αβ-heterodimer, NO-GC produces cyclic guanosine-3',5'-monophophate (cGMP) to regulate vasodilation and proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). In contrast to VSMCs, only a few studies reported on the expression of the NO-GC αβ-heterodimer in human pericytes.

Article Synopsis
  • The implementation of bone substitute materials has led to advancements in bone regeneration strategies, with a focus on histomorphometry for assessing bone structure.
  • A systematic review analyzed 118 studies from the past decade, revealing that rats are the most commonly used animal model for research, with toluidine blue being the preferred staining method.
  • Key histomorphometric parameters evaluated included new bone formation and mineral apposition rate, with calcein green favored for dynamic histomorphometry, while the review also highlighted weaknesses in current research protocols.

Objective: Combining oblique lumbar interbody fusion (OLIF) with posterior pedicle screw fixation (PPSF) has been proposed to reduce cage subsidence, especially in osteoporotic spines. Recently, anterolateral screw-rod fixation has gained interest as it allows direct pathology observation and avoids a posterior approach. However, controversies exist between anterolateral screw fixation systems and traditional PPSF due to variations in osteoporotic vertebral mineral density, screw fixation positions, and fixation methods (bicortical vs.
