The Graduate Medical Education National Advisory Committee (GMENAC) was an advisory group to the Secretary, US Department of Health and Human Services. Its charter ended September 30, 1980. It submitted 107 recommendations to achieve a better balance between future physician requirements and future physician supply, by specialty and geography. Among its contributions were the development of a manpower forecasting framework and series of models which are described here, together with the results of these models. These models may have significant utility in future human resource planning at both national and local levels.

Objective: Youth inpatient and residential treatment psychiatric services are essential components of the continuum of care. Concern has grown about the diminished availability of these services and the increasing need for them. This study investigates the process of planning for future inpatient resources (beds, staff and costs) for maternity (pregnancy and childbirth) services. The process of planning is approached from a patient-centered philosophy; hence, how do we discharge a suitably rested healthy mother who is fully capable of caring for the newborn baby back into the community? This demonstrates some of the difficulties in predicting future births and investigates trends in the average length of stay. While it is relatively easy to document longer-term (past) trends in births and the conditions relating to pregnancy and birth, it is exceedingly difficult to predict the future nature of such trends.
