Nosological and pathophysiological aspects of psychiatric syndromes in the work of Emil Kraepelin are discussed. A chronological review shows that through developing his nosology, pathophysiological points of view because more and more prominent and nosological aspects got only a relative weight. Considering this background, the still accepted nosology of Kraepelin seems to have only the character of a typology, i.e. operationalizing symptoms on the psychopathological level in order to improve scientific communication. The pathophysiological aspect of a psychiatric nosology, however, allows us to prove--by means of psychophysiological methods--unspecific pathophysiologic mechanisms. These mechanisms characterize the organism affected by a psychiatric illness as having a lower modulatory capacity of psychophysiological systems in comparison with healthy controls. This is demonstrated in the results of the investigations of the Tübingen research group on depressive as well as schizophrenic syndromes.

Insomnia disorder is a frequent sleep disorder leading to significant health and economic consequences. It has been proposed that individuals with insomnia may experience compromised deactivation systems of arousal, leading to a chronic state of hyperactivation of arousal known as hyperarousal, along with instability in the flip-flop system. Such disruptions may have a primarily impact on the sleep homeostatic drive process.

Introduction: The diagnostic boundaries between schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are controversial due to the ambiguity of psychiatric nosology. From this perspective, it is noteworthy that formal thought disorder has historically been considered pathognomonic of schizophrenia. Given that human thought is partially based on language, we can hypothesize that alterations in language may help differentiate between schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Recent years have seen a shift toward alternative nosologies of psychopathology, which frequently include a dimension of externalizing psychopathology. The Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology is one such framework. Research using data from the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study has identified a broad-based externalizing dimension, but no research to date has sought to empirically identify finer-grained externalizing subdimensions despite the research benefits associated with the use of homogenous dimensions.

Unlabelled: Essential arterial hypertension (EAH) is a chronic non-communicable disease (CNCD), that develops in parallel with other pathologies of the CNCD group, the presence of which is promoted by hypodynamia with consequent disturbance of aerobic energy supply processes. These disorders include, in particular, degenerative-dystrophic processes of the locomotor system, comprising of the cervical spine. In turn, development of these processes can additionally worsen hemodynamics with disturbance of the oxygen transfer processes.

Article Synopsis
  • The study critiques traditional psychiatric classifications and proposes the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP) as a more effective dimensional approach to understanding mental disorders.
  • HiTOP is based on quantitative research linking various diagnoses and symptoms, making it potentially more relevant for clinical neuroscience.
  • A systematic review of 164 neuroimaging studies found consistent results across multiple levels of psychopathology, indicating HiTOP's promise but also pointing out limitations in the current research landscape.
