Three pseudohyphal isolates of Cryptococcus neoformans were inoculated intracranially into mice. Four weeks post-inoculation the animals showed no symptoms of disease and the number of viable cells per brain decreased to zero. Possible roles of pseudohyphal forms of C. neoformans in the immunology and pathogenesis of cryptococcosis are discussed.

The genus is polymorphic, able to transition between yeast, hyphal and pseudohyphal forms. Species of the genus are ubiquitous fungi that are distributed in various environments around the world. During a survey of fungal diversity in the gut of amphipods ( and undescribed Dogielinotid amphipods) from the Amphawa estuary, Samut Songkhram province, Thailand, five black yeast strains (DMKU-MG01, DMKU-MG07, DMKU-MG08, DMKU-HG10 and DMKU-FG04) were identified as representing a novel taxon on the basis of a combination of morphological and molecular phylogenetic features.

Lichens are of great ecological importance but mechanisms regulating lichen symbiosis are not clear. Umbilicaria muhlenbergii is a lichen-forming fungus amenable to molecular manipulations and dimorphic. Here, we established conditions conducive to symbiotic interactions and lichen differentiation and showed the importance of UMP1 MAP kinase in lichen development.

The cell cycle is a vital process of cell division that is required to sustain life. Since faithful cell division is critical for the proper growth and development of an organism, the study of the cell cycle becomes a fundamental research objective. has been an excellent unicellular system for unraveling the secrets of cell division, and the process of synchronization in budding yeast has been standardized.

The lichen-forming fungus Umbilicaria muehlenbergii undergoes a phenotypic transition from a yeast-like to a pseudohyphal form. However, it remains unknown if a common mechanism is involved in the phenotypic switch of U. muehlenbergii at the transcriptional level.

Candida albicans is a commensal organism of the human gastrointestinal tract and a prevalent opportunistic pathogen. It exhibits different morphogenic forms to survive in different host niches with distinct environmental conditions (pH, temperature, oxidative stress, nutrients, serum, chemicals, radiation, etc.) and genetic factors (transcription factors and genes).
