Genetic coding in bacteria largely operates via the "one gene-one protein" paradigm. However, the peculiarities of the mRNA structure, the versatility of the genetic code, and the dynamic nature of translation sometimes allow organisms to deviate from the standard rules of protein encoding. Bacteria can use several unorthodox modes of translation to express more than one protein from a single mRNA cistron.

Objectives: Polymorphisms in the lysosomal transporter encoded by the pfcrt gene directly impact on Plasmodium falciparum susceptibility to aminoquinolines. The Lys76Thr mutation is the critical change conferring chloroquine resistance in vitro and in vivo, but always occurs with additional non-synonymous changes in the pfcrt coding sequence. We sought to better describe pfcrt polymorphisms distal to codon 76.

Gigaspora rosea is a member of the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF; Glomeromycota) and a distant relative of Glomus species that are beneficial to plant growth. To allow for a better understanding of Glomeromycota, we have sequenced the mitochondrial DNA of G. rosea.

In this study, we have determined the complete nucleotide sequence of the mitochondrial genome of Octopus minor. It is 15,974 nucleotide pairs and encodes 13 proteins, two ribosomal RNAs and 22 tRNAs of the mitochondrion's own protein synthesizing system. Seven of thirteen proteins are encoded by the H-strand, while the other six proteins, as well as the two ribosomal RNAs are encoded by the L-strand.

Viruses depend heavily on host cells for replication and exploit the host translation machinery for its gene expression using various unorthodox translation mechanisms. According to the conventional scanning model, only the 5'-proximal gene in the viral RNA is accessible to the ribosomes whereas other genes are silent. In this study, we use a model plant RNA virus, Hibiscus chlorotic ringspot virus (HCRSV), to investigate various translation mechanisms involved in regulation of the expression of internal genes.
