The complete amino acid sequence of Notechis II-1, a non-neurotoxic, non-enzymatic phospholipase A2 homolog from the venom of the Australian tiger snake Notechis s. scutatus has been determined. The protein consists of a single chain of 119 amino acids. The main fragmentation of the reduced and S-carboxymethylated derivative was accomplished by cleavage with Staphylococcus aureus V8 protease. Tryptic peptides were used to align and complete the sequence, which was determined mainly by automated Edman degradation. Notechis II-1 contains all of the residues that appear to be invariant in elapid and pancreatic phospholipases A2 except at position 30 in the sesquence, where an otherwise invariant glycine is replaced by serine.

Mojave toxin (Mtx) is a heterodimeric, neurotoxic phospholipase A2 (PLA2) found in the venom of the Mojave rattlesnake, Crotalus scutulatus scutulatus, and is characteristic of all rattlesnake presynaptic neurotoxins. This paper describes the isolation and nucleotide (nt) sequence of the genomic clones encoding both the non-neurotoxic, non-enzymatic acidic subunit (Mtx-a) and the toxic, PLA2-active basic subunit (Mtx-b), and compares their structures. Both cloned genes shared virtually identical overall organization, with four exons separated by three introns, which were inserted in the same relative positions of the genes' coding regions.

There is no characteristic difference between the presynaptically neurotoxic and non-neurotoxic phospholipases, however, presynaptically neurotoxic phospholipases which are also myotoxic have a distinct charge distribution pattern.
