The study of the predictive ability of a marker is mainly based on the accuracy measures provided by the so-called confusion matrix. Besides, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve has become a popular index for summarizing the overall accuracy of a marker. However, the nature of the relationship between the marker and the outcome, and the role that potential confounders play in this relationship could be fundamental in order to extrapolate the observed results.

The streptothricin antibiotics were among the first antibiotics to be discovered from the environment and remain some of the most recovered antimicrobials in natural product screens. Increasing rates of antibiotic resistance and recognition that streptothricin antibiotics may play a role in countering so-called super-bugs has led to the re-evaluation of their clinical potential. Here we will review the current state of knowledge of streptothricins and their resistance in bacteria, with a focus on the potential for new resistance mechanisms and determinants to emerge in the context of potential widespread clinical adoption of this antibiotic class.

DNA-joining by ligase and polymerase enzymes has provided the foundational tools for generating recombinant DNA and enabled the assembly of gene and genome-sized synthetic products. Xenobiotic nucleic acid (XNA) analogues of DNA and RNA with alternatives to the canonical bases, so-called 'unnatural' nucleobase pairs (UBP-XNAs), represent the next frontier of nucleic acid technologies, with applications as novel therapeutics and in engineering semi-synthetic biological organisms. To realise the full potential of UBP-XNAs, researchers require a suite of compatible enzymes for processing nucleic acids on a par with those already available for manipulating canonical DNA.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)─so-called "forever chemicals"─contaminate the drinking water of about 100 million people in the U.S. alone and are inefficiently removed by standard treatment techniques.

Throughout the last centuries, European climate changed substantially, which affected the potential to plant and grow crops. These changes happened not just over time but also had a spatial dimension. Yet, despite large climatic fluctuations, quantitative historical studies typically rely on static measures for agricultural suitability due to the non-availability of time-varying indices.
