Total fucose and protein was measured in gingival fluid samples collected from 16 human subjects. A significantly higher total protein concentration was found for the control (clinically normal) group when compared to the experimental (severe clinical inflammation) group. This is probably due to the higher gingival flow rate found in the experimental group. The total fucose analyses showed no statistical difference between both groups, but when fucose to protein ratios were studied, a significantly higher ratio was found for the experimental group when compared to the controls. This probably represents the breakdown of plasma and tissue glycoproteins which may occur as a result of inflammation.

In the present study, a D-fucose binding lectin from the serum of darkling beetle, Zophobas morio was purified and their mitogenic potential over human B-cells was evaluated. Biochemical assays on the preliminary characterization revealed the occurrence of single D-fucose binding lectin.

Galactosides are major carbohydrates that are found in plant cell walls and various prebiotic oligosaccharides. Studying the detailed biochemical functions of β-galactosidases in degrading these carbohydrates is important. Fucosidosis is a rare lysosomal storage disease caused by α-L-fucosidase deficiency following a mutation in the gene. This enzyme is responsible for breaking down fucose-containing glycoproteins, glycolipids, and oligosaccharides within the lysosome. Mutations in result in either reduced enzyme activity or complete loss of function, leading to the accumulation of fucose-rich substrates in lysosomes.

In the development of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), peritoneal macrophages contribute to the resident intestinal macrophage pool. Previous studies have demonstrated that oral administration of L-fucose exerts an immunomodulatory effect and repolarizes the peritoneal macrophages in vivo in mice. In this study, we analyzed the phenotype and metabolic profile of the peritoneal macrophages from mice, as well as the effect of L-fucose on the metabolic and morphological characteristics of these macrophages in vitro.

Background And Objectives: Salivary glands proteins but not glycoconjugates have been previously studied in mosquito vectors of human diseases. Glycoconjugates from salivary gland-derived proteins from human-feeding tick vectors can elicit hypersensitivity reactions which may also occur with mosquito bites.
