The cell divisions in pea and maize seedling root meristems were synchronized by treatment with 0.03 per cent hydroxyurea for 24 hours. At different times after block cessation (removing seedlings from hydroxyurea), i.e. according to certain phases and subphases of the mitotic cycle, the seedlings were treated with 60Co gamma-radiation at doses from 3 to 32 Gy. Evaluation of seedling radioresistance by the survival of the main root meristem on the tenth day after irradiation led to the following sequence of cell stages in order of increasing resistance. For the pea root meristem: G2, M, late G1, early S, late S, middle S and early G1. For the maize root meristem: late G2, M, G1, early S, early G2, late S and middle S.

Plants respond to higher ambient temperatures by modifying their growth rate and habitus. This review aims to summarize the accumulated knowledge obtained with Arabidopsis seedlings grown at normal and elevated ambient temperatures. Thermomorphogenesis in the shoot and the root is overviewed separately, since the experiments indicate differences in key aspects of thermomorphogenesis in the two organs.

Spatial-Temporal Dynamics of Adventitious Roots of Pers. Seedlings Grown with Auxin/Cytokinin.

Life (Basel)

January 2025

Biotecnología y Bioingeniería, Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados del IPN, Avenida Instituto Politécnico Nacional 2508, Colonia San Pedro Zacatenco, Ciudad de México C.P. 07360, Mexico.

The spatial-temporal dynamics of an in vitro radicular system of for the development of rhizofiltration technologies, with the potential for use as a phytotreatment of eutrophicated water, were studied for the first time in the roots of seedlings and in rhizotron systems. The effect of indole-3-acetic acid (AIA) in combination with kinetin (CIN) or 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) on seedlings cultivated in the light and dark in three radicular systems and in a rhizotrophic regime for the screening of dynamic rhizogenic lines, by weekly allometric measurements of the length and number of roots, were studied. Inhibition of the elongation and branching velocities of roots by BAP and light was observed but CIN increased elongation and branching.

HDC1 Promotes Primary Root Elongation by Regulating Auxin and K Homeostasis in Response to Low-K Stress.

Biology (Basel)

Plants frequently encounter relatively low and fluctuating potassium (K) concentrations in soil, with roots serving as primary responders to this stress. Histone modifications, such as de-/acetylation, can function as epigenetic markers of stress-inducible genes. However, the signaling network between histone modifications and low-K (LK) response pathways remains unclear.

Background: Grape (Vitis vinifera) crops encounter significant challenges in overcoming bud endodormancy in warm winter areas worldwide. Research on the mechanisms governing bud dormancy release has focused primarily on stress regulation; however, cell wall regulation of bud meristem regrowth mechanism during the dormancy release remains obscure.

Results: In this study, transmission electron microscopy revealed significant changes in the grape bud cell wall following hydrogen cyanamide (HC) treatment, accompanied by an increase in β-1,3-glucanase activity.

OsMAINTENANCE OF MERISTEM LIKE 1 controls style number at high temperatures in rice.

Plant Mol Biol

January 2025

Department of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, University of Milan, via Celoria 2, 20133, Milan, Italy.

OsMAIL1 encodes for a rice protein of the Plant Mobile Domain (PMD) family and is strongly upregulated during floral induction in response to the presence of the florigens Heading date 3a (Hd3a) and RICE FLOWERING LOCUS T1 (RFT1). Although OsMAIL1 expression depends on the florigens, osmail1 null mutants do not show delay in flowering time, rather OsMAIL1 participates in ensuring successful reproduction. Indeed, when day temperatures reach 35 °C (7 °C higher than standard greenhouse conditions), osmail1 mutants show increased sterility due to abnormal pistil development with about half of the plants developing three styles topped by stigmas.
