The International System for Serous Fluid Cytopathology (TIS) survey in preparation for TIS 2.0.

J Am Soc Cytopathol

December 2024

Department of Cellular Pathology, Guy's & St. Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, London, UK.

Introduction: The International System for Serous Fluid Cytopathology (TIS) has gained acceptance and has led to literature validating original concepts and suggesting refinements. In preparation for the second edition of TIS, editors generated a survey to solicit experience with and opinions about TIS.

Materials And Methods: An online survey available from March 8 to June 15, 2024, included 56 questions, offered in 7 languages, related to the practice of serous fluid cytopathology.

Introduction Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) has suboptimal survival rates for adolescents and young adults (AYA) as compared to children. Very limited studies have been conducted on AYA patients in India. This study aimed to identify the cytogenetic and immunophenotype characteristics of B-cell ALL (B-ALL) in AYA patients and determine its correlation with clinicopathological parameters in the Southern India region.

Human parainfluenza viruses (hPIVs) are causative agents of upper and lower respiratory tract infections and they have four serotypes. The virion surface displays hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN), having hemagglutinating (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) activities in a single molecule. The HA activity binds the virion to sialic acid on the viral receptor on host cells and the NA releases the progeny viruses from the cell surface.

Article Synopsis
  • Fluoride, while beneficial in many applications, can be toxic in higher concentrations, impacting human health, particularly concerning blood cells like platelets.
  • A study was conducted on healthy male adults using sodium fluoride (NaF) to examine its effects on platelet energy metabolism, function, and viability over three days.
  • Results indicated that NaF at 1 mM reduced platelet viability and function by decreasing mitochondrial energy production and increasing reactive oxygen species (ROS), with similar but less pronounced effects at 0.5 mM.

Unlabelled: Many key aspects of retinal ganglion cell (RGC) neurodegeneration in glaucoma are associated with mitochondrial dysfunction. Understanding the mechanisms and relationships between structural and functional changes in mitochondria would be beneficial for developing mitochondria-targeted therapeutic strategies to protect RGCs from glaucomatous neurodegeneration.

Purpose: This study determines the extent of mitochondrial dysfunction in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and evaluates the potential for stabilizing the glaucomatous process by improving mitochondrial functional activity and energy production by therapy with Mexidol and Mexidol FORTE 250.
