Introduction: Chinese herbal medicines are relatively inexpensive and have fewer side effects, making them an effective option for improving health and treating diseases. As a result, they have gained more attention in recent years. The weaning period is a critical stage in the life of yaks, often inducing stress in calves.

Retinoids, particularly all-trans-retinoic acid (ATRA), play crucial roles in various physiological processes, including development, immune response, and reproduction, by regulating gene transcription through nuclear receptors. This review explores the biosynthetic pathways, homeostatic mechanisms, and the significance of retinoid-binding proteins in maintaining ATRA levels. It highlights the intricate balance required for ATRA homeostasis, emphasizing that both excess and deficiency can lead to severe developmental and health consequences.

The active metabolite of vitamin A, all-trans-retinoic acid (atRA), is critical for maintenance of many cellular processes. Although the enzymes that can synthesize and clear atRA in mammals have been identified, their tissue and cell-type specific roles are still not fully established. Based on the plasma protein binding, tissue distribution and lipophilicity of atRA, atRA partitions extensively to lipid membranes and other neutral lipids in cells.

Background: Herpes simplex keratitis (HSK) is a recurrent inflammatory disease of cornea primarily initiated by type I herpes simplex virus infection of corneal epithelium. However, early diagnosis of HSK remains challenging due to the lack of specific biomarkers. This study aims to identify biomarkers for HSK through tear metabolomics analysis between HSK and healthy individuals.

The liver-gut axis is an important regulatory axis for the host's metabolic functions. The study of liver gene expression, changes in metabolic products and the regulation of gut microbial communities in plateau animals under harsh environments can reveal the mechanisms by which Tibetan goats adapt to the plateau environment. This study employs transcriptome, metabolome and metagenomic analyses to reveal the differences in genes, metabolism, and gut microbiota between Jianzhou big-eared goats (JBG) and Xizang cashmere goats (TCG), which is of significant importance for improving survival models of high-altitude ruminants.
