The successful management of a patient with potentially lethal intrathoracic trauma resulting from bull horn injury and involving the intrapericardial and extrapericardial portions of the right inferior pulmonary vein is described. To the best of our knowledge this particular injury has not previously been reported. Irrespective of the external appearance of the wound, hospitalization and close observation are essential. Exploration if required should be under optimal operative conditions. Popularization of disbudding and dehorning will prove an effective preventive measure.

The aims of this study were to assess the effect of meloxicam at the time of lameness treatment for hoof-horn (HH) lesions in dairy cattle on 1) time to lameness soundness post trimming and block application and 2) reproductive success Five seasonal-calving pasture-based dairy farms located in the Waikato region of New Zealand were enrolled into a randomized clinical interventional trial. Farmers were tasked with identifying lame animals over a period of approximately -4 to 6 weeks relative to the herd start of mating (HSM), with lameness subsequently confirmed with lameness score (LS) by trained technicians (0-3 scale, where ≥2 are considered lame). Animals with a LS ≥2 were examined by a veterinarian who then enrolled animals if they presented lame with HH (white-line or sole) lesions.

In this study, I report an unexpected case of a Holstein calf that developed horns even though the sire was homozygous and the dam was heterozygous for polledness. After verifying and confirming the correct parentage, the parents and offspring were genotyped with the Illumina EuroG_MD BeadChip and the SNPs in the polled region on chromosome 1 were evaluated. In addition, the father was sequenced with next generation sequencing to identify possible, previously unknown variants.

This study investigates the prevalence, severity, and breed-specific responses of various claw lesions across 4 dairy breeds, Simmental, Alpine Grey, Reggiana, and Valdostana over different seasons and regions in Italy. A total of 131 farms and 2,223 animals were evaluated, consisting of 1,239 Simmental, 457 Alpine Grey, 221 Reggiana, and 306 Valdostana cows.
