In this study, kaolinite-poly(urea-formaldehyde) was successfully prepared through the polymerization of urea intercalated within the kaolinite structure. Polymerization was carried out under ambient conditions by immersing kaolinite-urea in formaldehyde. Evidence of urea intercalation and polymerization was obtained from FTIR, XRD, and thermal analysis (TG-DSC).

Micro(nano)plastics (MNPs), widely distributed in the environment, can be ingested and accumulated by various organisms. Recently, the transgenerational transport of MNPs from parental organisms to their offspring has attracted increasing attention. In this review, we summarize the patterns, specific pathways, and related mechanisms of intergenerational transfer of MNPs in plants, non-mammals (zooplankton and fish) and mammals.

The effect of bone relaxation on the simulated pull-off force of a cementless femoral knee implant.

J Biomech

January 2025

Radboudumc, Orthopaedic Research Lab, PO Box 9101, 6500 HB Nijmegen, the Netherlands.

Aseptic loosening is the primary cause of revision in cementless total knee arthroplasty (TKA), emphasizing the importance of strong initial stability for long-term implant success. Pre-clinical evaluations are crucial for understanding implant fixation mechanics and improving implant designs. Finite element (FE) analysis models often use linear elastic bone material models, which do not accurately reflect bone's mechanical behavior.

Crystallography of the litharge to massicot phase transformation from neutron powder diffraction data.

Acta Crystallogr B Struct Sci Cryst Eng Mater

February 2025

CSIRO Division of Mineral Products, Port Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

The crystallographic phase change from tetragonal litharge (α-PbO; P4/nmm) to orthorhombic massicot (β-PbO; Pbcm) has been studied by full-matrix Rietveld analysis of high-temperature neutron powder diffraction data collected in equal steps from ambient temperature up to 925 K and back down to 350 K. The phase transformation takes place between 850 and 925 K, with the coexisting phases having equal abundance by weight at 885 K. The product massicot remains metastable on cooling to near ambient temperature.

Iron(III) (oxyhydr)oxide minerals with varying particle sizes commonly coexist in natural environments and are susceptible to both chemical and microbial reduction, affecting the fate and mobility of trace elements, nutrients, and pollutants. The size-dependent reduction behavior of iron (oxyhydr)oxides in single and mixed mineral systems remains poorly understood. In this study, we used microbial and mediated electrochemical reduction approaches to investigate the reduction kinetics and extents of goethite and hematite.
