Activation of mononuclear phagocytes by staphylococci in vitro results in the production of endogenous pyrogen. Macrophage pyrogen does not posses species pyrogenic specificity. Intracisternal injection increases pyrogen susceptibility more than 100-fold as compared to intravenous injection. Still more abrupt increase in pyrogen susceptibility was observed in the animals in the presence of elevated body cAMP concentration induced by theophylline preinjection.

Background: Modern medicine is not the choice of patients with "shimetere" in the Gurage community owing to their perception of 'parenteral medication use severely aggravates the disease'. For this reason, the root part of Polygala sadebeckiana Gürke is commonly utilized as traditional medicine in the management of the disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of Polygala sadebeckiana Gürke extract on bacterial isolates from wound samples of patients with "Shimetere".

The impact of staphylococci on food poisoning and infections could be higher than previously reported. In this study, we characterised the occurrence and coexistence of antimicrobial resistance and virulence genes of staphylococci isolates in foods. Staphylococci were isolated from 236 samples of selected street-vended foods and identified.

Rice husk-based pyrogenic carbonaceous material efficiently promoted peroxymonosulfate activation toward the non-radical pathway for the degradation of pharmaceuticals in water.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

December 2023

Grupo de Investigación en Remediación Ambiental y Biocatálisis (GIRAB), Instituto de Química, Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales, Universidad de Antioquia UdeA, Calle 70 No. 52-21, Medellín, Colombia.

Pristine pyrogenic carbonaceous material (BRH) obtained from rice husk and modified with FeCl (BRH-FeCl) were prepared and explored as carbocatalysts for the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade a model pharmaceutical (acetaminophen, ACE) in water. The BRH-FeCl/PMS system removed the pharmaceutical faster than the BRH/PMS. This is explained because in BRH-FeCl, compared to BRH, the modification (iron played a role as a structuring agent mainly) increased the average pore diameter and the presence of functional groups such as -COO, -Si-O, or oxygen vacancies, which allowed to remove the pollutant through an adsorption process and significant carbocatalytic degradation.

Major objectives of this work were to: (1) substantiate the 24-hour pattern in the occurrence of childhood febrile seizures (CFSs) by a novel time series meta-analysis of past reported time-of-day data and (2) discuss its potential circadian rhythm-dependencies. Comprehensive search of the published literature retrieved eight articles that met inclusion criteria. Three investigations were conducted in Iran, two in Japan, and one each in Finland, Italy, and South Korea, representing a total of 2461 mostly simple febrile seizures of children who were on average about 2 years of age.

Background: Pine flatwoods of the southeastern United States were shaped by frequent fires. Land managers use prescribed fires to control fuels but also to restore historical fire dynamics. Broad outcomes of this practice are well-understood, but impacts on many organisms are still being explored.
