One of the main problems encountered in cryosurgery is that of controlling the amount of tissue that is irreversibly destroyed by cooling. In vitro-experiments in which the homogeneous cooling of various substances, as well as "ice-ball" propagation within different tissues of animals via a cryotip were evaluated. In vivo experiments, on an anaesthetized pig, indicate CT to be a useful continuous-monitoring technique with a high spatial resolution. Using CT simultaneous localization of pathological tissue and measurement of temperature distribution is possible. The density changes induced by cooling were visualized on CT and the corresponding temperature changes were measured using thermocouples. The greatest decrease in density was observed as a change of phase took place. The speed of ice-ball propagation as well as the diameter of the ice ball generated varied considerably depending on the type of tissue. Construction of cryoprobes of a very small diameter could facilitate the percutaneous treatment of lesions within the body.

Motor-evoked potential (MEP) monitoring is an electrophysiologic technique useful for testing peripheral motor nerve integrity during cryoablation cases with risk of nerve injury. Previously, neuromonitoring within the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) suite for cryoablation has not been performed as magnetic needles are used which could cause magnetic field interactions with neuromonitoring leads. We present the first report of a patient who underwent MEP monitoring during MRI-guided cryoablation of a vascular malformation adjacent to the brachial plexus.

Background/objectives: Our aim was to compare the complication rates of different embolization materials (absolute ethanol and gelatin sponges) used for combined transarterial embolization (TAE) and to investigate the impact of tumor size on operative time and cryoneedle use during percutaneous cryoablation (PCA).
Methods: We treated 27 patients (9 women and 18 men; mean age, 74 years) with 28 early-stage (T1a) renal cell carcinoma (RCC) lesions using combined TAE and PCA between September 2018 and January 2021. During TAE, 15 lesions in 14 patients were embolized using mixed absolute ethanol and iodized oil.
