Mechanical and functional characterisation of a 3D porous biomimetic extracellular matrix to study insulin secretion from pancreatic β-cell lines.

In Vitro Model

December 2024

Univ. Lille, Inserm, CHU Lille, Institut Pasteur Lille, U1167 - RID-AGE - Facteurs de Risque Et Déterminants Moléculaires Des Maladies Liées Au Vieillissement, F-59000 Lille, France.

Background: Extracellular matrix (ECM) is a three-dimensional (3D) structure found around cells in the tissues of many organisms. It is composed mainly of fibrous proteins, such as collagen and elastin, and adhesive glycoproteins, such as fibronectin and laminin-as well as proteoglycans, such as hyaluronic acid. The ECM performs several essential functions, including structural support of tissues, regulation of cell communication, adhesion, migration, and differentiation by providing biochemical and biomechanical cues to the cells.

Cyanobacterial phycoremediation: a sustainable approach to dairy wastewater management.

Environ Technol

January 2025

Botany Discipline, School of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology, Goa University, Goa, India.

The dairy industry is a significant sector within the food industries, known for its high-water consumption and consequent generation of dairy wastewater (DWW), which is rich in pollutants like Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD). Improper disposal of DWW poses serious environmental challenges, including eutrophication and highlighting the need for sustainable biological treatment methods. This study investigates the potential of indigenous cyanobacterial strains , , , and for the bioremediation of DWW.

The gut microbiome significantly impacts human health, yet cultivation challenges hinder its exploration. Here, we combine deep whole-metagenome sequencing with culturomics to selectively enrich for taxa and functional capabilities of interest. Using a modified commercial base medium, 50 growth modifications were evaluated, spanning antibiotics, physico-chemical conditions, and bioactive compounds.

Proton-translocating NADH-ubiquinone oxidoreductase (complex I) catalyzes the oxidation of NADH by ubiquinone accompanied by the transmembrane transfer of four protons, thus contributing to the formation of a proton motive force () across the coupling membranes of mitochondria and bacteria, which drives ATP synthesis in oxidative phosphorylation. In recent years, great progress has been achieved in resolving complex I structure by means of X-ray crystallography and high-resolution cryo-electron microscopy, which has led to the formulation of detailed hypotheses concerning the molecular mechanism of coupling of the redox reaction to vectorial proton translocation. To test and probe proposed mechanisms, a comprehensive study of complex I using other methods including molecular dynamics and a variety of biochemical studies such as kinetic and inhibitory analysis is required.

Utility of integrated papyrus-bivalve for bioremediation of aquaculture wastewater.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

January 2025

Department of Environmental Management, College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Makerere University, P.O. Box 7062, Kampala, Uganda.

Aquaculture generates substantial amount of residual feeds and faecal matter that accumulate in the culture environment and pollute effluent-receiving water, diminishing its ecological functioning. To devise means of treating nutrient-rich aquaculture wastewater, the efficiency of integrated papyrus-bivalve mesocosms in removing nutrients was evaluated. The mesocosms were fed on water (6600 L) from one brood-stock pond and allowed to settle for 2 weeks.
