Background/purpose: Early osseointegration of titanium (Ti) dental implants relies on the surface topography. Surface modification of Ti seeks to enhance bone regeneration around implants. Acid etching is the simple, less technique sensitive and cost-effective technique for surface treatment.

Research on the function of epigenetic regulation in the inflammation of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Life Med

August 2024

Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery, Xi-Jing Hospital, Fourth Military Medical University, Changle West Road, Xincheng District, Xi'an, Shaanxi 710032, China.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most prevalent chronic liver condition, characterized by a spectrum that progresses from simple hepatic steatosis to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, which may eventually lead to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The precise pathogenic mechanisms underlying NAFLD and its related metabolic disturbances remain elusive. Epigenetic modifications, which entail stable transcriptional changes without altering the DNA sequence, are increasingly recognized as pivotal.

Drug delivery for epilepsy treatment faces enormous challenges, where the sole focus on enhancing the ability of drugs to penetrate the blood-brain barrier (BBB) through ligand modification is insufficient because of the absence of seizure-specific drug accumulation. In this study, an amphipathic drug carrier with a glucose transporter (GLUT)-targeting capability was synthesised by conjugating 2-deoxy-2-amino-D-glucose (2-DG) to the model carrier DSPE-PEG. A 2-DG-modified nano drug delivery system (NDDS) possessing robust stability and favourable biocompatibility was then fabricated using the nanoprecipitation method.

Singularity of Lévy walks in the lifted Pomeau-Manneville map.

Chaos

January 2025

Centre for Complex Systems, School of Mathematical Sciences, Queen Mary University of London, Mile End Road, London E1 4NS, United Kingdom.

Since groundbreaking works in the 1980s it is well-known that simple deterministic dynamical systems can display intermittent dynamics and weak chaos leading to anomalous diffusion. A paradigmatic example is the Pomeau-Manneville (PM) map which, suitably lifted onto the whole real line, was shown to generate superdiffusion that can be reproduced by stochastic Lévy walks (LWs). Here, we report that this matching only holds for parameter values of the PM map that are of Lebesgue measure zero in its two-dimensional parameter space.

Multifunctional DNA-Collagen Biomaterials: Developmental Advances and Biomedical Applications.

ACS Biomater Sci Eng

January 2025

J. Crayton Pruitt Family Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida 32611, United States.

The complexation of nucleic acids and collagen forms a platform biomaterial greater than the sum of its parts. This union of biomacromolecules merges the extracellular matrix functionality of collagen with the designable bioactivity of nucleic acids, enabling advances in regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, gene delivery, and targeted therapy. This review traces the historical foundations and critical applications of DNA-collagen complexes and highlights their capabilities, demonstrating them as biocompatible, bioactive, and tunable platform materials.
