In our experience, the ultrasonic examination should be the procedure of choice in the initial investigation of the patient with jaundice. It is independent from liver function and a noninvasive test which can be performed rapidly; in addition, the cause of extrahepatic obstruction can often be determined preoperatively. In our study, in many patients, the rose bengal scintigram has been indeterminate and has not been helpful in predicting whether obstructive or nonobstructive jaundice exists. Rose bengal scintigraphy appears to be of most help only in those patients in whom an adequate sonographic examination cannot be performed. Newer imaging agents currently being developed may prove to be more satisfactory in the future.

Aggregated gold nanoparticles as photoactivators for the photopolymerization of proteins.

J Photochem Photobiol B

Department of Chemistry, Susquehanna University, 514 University Avenue, Selinsgrove, PA 17870, USA. Electronic address:

Photopolymerization of bovine serum albumin was carried out using reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by the irradiation of citrate-stabilized gold nanoparticles by a pulsed Nd:YAG laser. The ROS in this case, singlet oxygen (O), targets aromatic amino acids within the protein to induce photopolymerization or crosslinking. Other ROS, like the hydroxyl radical, can also form in solution and under high-energy irradiation.

Brucellosis is a neglected infectious disease caused by animals and is becoming a public health problem in developing countries. There are limited case reports of human brucellosis in Indonesia because the symptoms are not specific. This study investigated the association between serological tests for brucellosis among workers and their knowledge, attitude, and behavior.

Department of Veterinary Management of Animal Resources, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Liège, Belgium.

This cross-sectional study aimed to estimate the seroprevalence and the potential risk factors of Brucella infection among goats in family farms in the southern east of Algeria. A total of 196 sera samples were randomly collected from 59 family farms and tested in parallel by Rose Bengal test (RBT) and indirect ELISA (iELISA). A structured questionnaire was used to collect information on potential risk factors.

We report the design and development of a novel multifunctional nanostructure, RB-AuSiO_HSA-DOX, where tri-modal cancer treatment strategies-photothermal therapy (PTT), photodynamic therapy (PDT), chemotherapy-luminescent properties and targeting are integrated into the same scaffold. It consists of a gold core with optical and thermo-plasmonic properties and is covered by a silica shell entrapping a well-known photosensitizer and luminophore, Rose Bengal (RB). The nanoparticle surface was decorated with Human Serum Albumin (HSA) through a covalent conjugation to confer its targeting abilities and as a carrier of Doxorubicin (DOX), one of the most effective anticancer drugs in clinical chemotherapy.

Orthogonal upconversion nanocarriers for combined photodynamic therapy and precisely triggered gene silencing in combating keloids.

J Control Release

January 2025

Department of Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery, Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan 430074, China. Electronic address:

Keloids are pathological scars characterized by excessive fibroblast proliferation, abnormal collagen deposition, and chronic inflammation, which often result in high recurrence rates and limited treatment success. Targeting BACH1 with gene therapy has shown promise in regulating fibroblast activity and reducing inflammation. However, effective delivery systems for targeted gene therapy in keloids remain a major challenge.
