Background: Prolonged postoperative ileus (PPOI) reportedly leads to compromised postoperative recovery and increased healthcare costs. However, the evidence for this claim was obtained from studies that included patients with both primary and secondary PPOI. How primary PPOI affects the hospital length of stay (LOS) and healthcare costs is not well documented.

Article Synopsis
  • The study wanted to see how surgery for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) went when done with a robotic system versus traditional laparoscopy.
  • It looked at things like how long surgeries took, complications after surgery, and if patients had to stay longer in the hospital.
  • The results showed both methods were safe with similar outcomes, but the robotic surgeries took longer and had more internal connections made.

Rethinking postoperative care: same-day ileostomy closure discharge improves patient outcomes.

J Gastrointest Surg

May 2024

Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery, Department of Surgery, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, United States. Electronic address:

Background: The evolution of enhanced recovery pathways (ERPs) in colon and rectal surgery has led to the development of same-day discharge (SDD) procedures for selected patients. Early discharge after diverting loop ileostomy (DLI) closure was first described in 2003. However, its widespread adoption remains limited, with SDD accounting for only 3.

Effect of previous abdominal surgery on robotic-assisted rectal cancer surgery.

J Gastrointest Surg

April 2024

Department of Colon and Rectal Surgery, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, United States. Electronic address:

Background: The effect of previous abdominal surgery (PAS) in laparoscopic surgery is well known and significantly adds to longer hospital length of stay (LOS), postoperative ileus, and inadvertent enterotomies. However, little evidence exists in patients with PAS undergoing robotic-assisted (RA) rectal surgery.

Methods: All patients undergoing RA surgery for rectal cancer were reviewed.

The influence of systemic immune activation on whole-body calcium (Ca) trafficking and gastrointestinal tract (GIT) physiology is not clear. Thus, the study objectives were to characterize the effects of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on Ca pools and GIT dynamics to increase understanding of immune-induced hypocalcemia, ileus, and stomach hemorrhaging. Twelve crossbred pigs [44 ± 3 kg body weight (BW)] were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 intramuscular treatments: (1) control (CON; 2 mL saline; n = 6) or (2) LPS (40 µg LPS/kg BW; n = 6).
