A psychrophilic bacterium, previously described as Vibrio sp. strain ABE-1T, has been reassigned by phenotypic characterization, chemotaxonomic analysis and 16S rRNA phylogenetic analysis. The organism was curved rods and it could reduce nitrate to nitrite and hydrolyse gelatin and DNA, but not chitin.

A reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography technique was developed to separate, identify, and quantify individual phosphatidylglycerol (PG) molecular species in thylakoid membranes isolated from higher plant leaves. PG was first separated by thin-layer chromatography; then the dinitrobenzoyl derivatives of diacylglycerols produced after phospholipase C hydrolysis of PG were separated by a C18 reversed-phase column and detected at 254 nm. A linear response of the detector was observed in the range of 0.

Phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and phosphatidylglycerol (PG) were isolated from a Vibrio species of bacterium, known to produce eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3) and trans-hexadecenoic acid (16:1n-7), and subjected to phospholipase A2 degradation to determine the positional distribution of component fatty acids. At the two growth temperatures studied (20 and 5 degrees C), both 20:5n-3 and trans 16:1 n-7 were located mainly at position sn-2 in PE. Increases in the proportions of 20:5n-3 and trans 16:1n-7 in position sn-2 with decreasing growth temperature were balanced mainly by decreases in the level of iso-15:0.

The major phospholipid, phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), of Vibrio sp. strain ABE-1 contains a unique trans-unsaturated fatty acid, 9-trans-hexadecenoic acid (16:1(9t], at the sn-2 position of the glycerol moiety. The major molecular species of PE that contain 16:1(9t) at the sn-2 position have either 9-cis-hexadecenoic acid (16:1(9c] or hexadecanoic acid (16:0) at the sn-1 position.

The polar acyl lipid composition was determined for samples of chloroplast thylakoids isolated from Pisum sativum plants grown at light intensities of 50 and 300 μE·m(-2)·s(-1) and from Aesculus hippocastanum leaves taken from shade or sun environments. Lighting conditions had no major effect on lipid class composition except for a small increase in the amount of monogalactosyldiacylglycerol relative to other lipids in low compared with high light and shade compared with sun conditions. The thylakoids from low light and shade environments also had, relative to those from high light and sun conditions, a substantial decrease in the level of trans-hexadecenoic acid in phosphatidyglycerol.
