Evidence for low bioavailability of dietary nanoparticulate cerium in a freshwater food chain.

Aquat Toxicol

December 2024

ANSTO, Nuclear Science and Technology Division, Lucas Heights, NSW 2234, Australia.

Radioactive Ce in ionic (I-Ce), nano (N-Ce, 11 ± 9 nm mean primary particle size ± standard deviation) and micron-sized (M-Ce, 530 ± 440 µm) forms associated with natural and artificial diets in natural river water and synthetic freshwater were used to measure the real-time biokinetics of dietary Ce assimilation in a freshwater food chain. The model food chain consisted of microalgae (Raphidocelis subcapitata), snails (Potamopyrgus antipodarum) and prawns (Macrobrachium australiense). Pulse-chase experiments showed that 91-100 % of all forms of cerium associated with all diets and water types were eliminated from the digestive system of the snail and prawn within 24 h, with no detectable cerium assimilation.

Purpose: This paper outlines the commissioning of the Varian (VMS, Varian Medical Systems, Palo Alto, CA) Universal Interstitial Cylinder (UIC) applicator set for Ir-192 HDR brachytherapy. The UIC was commissioned for use with CT and MRI and a custom phantom was designed to avoid the introduction of water-like materials into the needle guide tracks. Various marker strands were investigated to determine which allowed the most accurate reconstruction of source positions.

PAR-dCLIP: Enabling detection of RNA binding protein target transcripts bound at 5' termini through the incorporation of a decapping step.

Methods Enzymol

October 2024

Department of Biochemistry, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Nashville, TN, United States; Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, TN, United States. Electronic address:

RNA binding proteins (RBPs) are responsible for facilitating a wealth of post-transcriptional gene regulatory functions. The role of an RBP on regulated transcripts can be investigated through a pull-down of the RBP and high-throughput sequencing (HTS) of the associated transcripts. Photoactivatable Ribonucleoside-Enhanced Crosslinking and Immunoprecipitation (PAR-CLIP), is one such pull-down method that isolates, detects, and sequences the cDNA of RBP-associated transcripts.

Background: Alcohol use in adolescence may increase susceptibility to substance use disorders (SUDs) in adulthood. This study determined if voluntary ethanol (EtOH) consumption during adolescence, combined with social isolation, alters the trajectory of EtOH and nicotine intake during adulthood, as well as activating brain neuroinflammation.

Methods: Adolescent male isolate- and group-housed rats were given 0.

Wavelet transform of autoradiographs: Analysis of MOX fuel heterogeneity.

Appl Radiat Isot

September 2024

Electronics & Instrumentation Group, BARC, Mumbai, India.

Radiation imaging is extensively applied in nuclear industry for various purposes including fuel characterization. Accurate quantitative evaluation of these radiographic images is difficult by the existing manual process and therefore image analytical methods have been attempted. The method of wavelet transform analysis has been applied on Gamma autoradiography (GAR) images of experimental (U, Pu)O mixed oxide (MOX) fuel pins with the objective to investigate the effectiveness of the method for fuel homogeneity characterization.
