Reducing green hydrogen production cost is critical for its widespread application. Proton-exchange-membrane water electrolyzers are among the most promising technologies, and significant research has been focused on developing more active, durable, and cost-effective catalysts to replace expensive iridium in the anode. Ruthenium oxide is a leading alternative while its stability is inadequate.

Despite only covering ~3 % of the land mass, peatlands store more carbon (C) per unit area than any other ecosystem. This is due to the discrepancy between C fixed by the plants (Gross primary productivity (GPP)) and decomposition. However, this C is vulnerable to frequent, severe droughts and changes in the peatland microclimate.

Water electrolysis represents a green and efficient strategy for hydrogen (H) production. However, the four-electron transfer process involved in its anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) half-reaction restricts the H generation rate. Employing hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR) as a substitute for OER in H generation can dramatically reduce energy consumption.

The Añana Salt Valley (northern Spain) is a continental saltern consisting of a series of natural springs that have been used for salt production for at least 7000 years. This habitat has been relatively understudied; therefore, prokaryotic diversity was investigated through Illumina-based 16S rRNA gene sequencing to determine if the waters within the valley exhibit distinctive microbiological characteristics. Two main types of water were found in the valley: salty (approximately 200 g/L salinity) from the diapiric structure and brackish (≤ 20 g/L salinity) from shallow streams.

Soil water sustains terrestrial life, yet its fate is uncertain under a changing climate. We conducted a deuterium labeling experiment to determine whether elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO), warming, and drought impact soil water storage and transport in a temperate grassland. Elevated CO created a wetter rootzone compared with ambient conditions, whereas warming decreased soil moisture.
