A total of 528 unrelated, apparently healthy, adult and adolescent Austrians (270 females, 258 males, mean age 22.1 years) were examined for lactose absorption capacity employing a noninvasive field test based on breath hydrogen (H2) determination. Subjects exhibiting a change of breath hydrogen concentration of less than 15 volumes per million (vpm) after a load of 50 g lactose (n = 422) were classified as lactose absorbers, 106 probands (20.1%) showing increases of breath hydrogen concentration between 16 and 111 vpm were diagnosed as lactose malabsorbers. The distribution of the lactase phenotypes was independent of age and sex. Intolerance symptoms after lactose administration were significantly more frequent in lactose malabsorbers. Grouping of probands according to the birth-places of their grandparents revealed significant differences in the distribution of the lactase phenotypes in East and West Austria (East 25%, West 15% lactose malabsorbers). These differences are discussed in the light of the population history of these regions.

Cellular senescence has emerged as one of the central hallmarks of aging and drivers of chronic comorbidities, including periodontal diseases. Senescence can also occur in younger tissues and instigate metabolic alterations and dysfunction, culminating in accelerated aging and pathological consequences. Senotherapeutics, such as the combination of dasatinib and quercetin (DQ), are being increasingly used to improve the clinical outcomes of chronic disorders and promote a healthy life span through the reduction of senescent cell burden and senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP).

Background: Resistance to existing therapies is a major cause of treatment failure in patients with refractory and relapsed B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (r/r B-NHL). Therapy-induced senescence (TIS) is one of the most important mechanisms of drug resistance.
Methods: This study used single-cell RNA sequencing to analyze doxorubicin-induced senescent B-NHL cells.

Chronic stress is associated with a higher risk for carcinogenesis as well as age-related diseases and immune dysfunction. There is evidence showing that psychological stress can contribute to premature immunosenescence. Therefore, the question arose whether chronic exposure to catecholamine could drive immune cells into senescence.

Unlabelled: Bioprospecting can uncover new yeast strains and species with interesting ecological characteristics and valuable biotechnological traits, such as the capacity to convert different carbon sources from industrial side and waste streams into bioproducts. In this study, we conducted untargeted yeast bioprospecting in tropical West Africa, collecting 1,996 isolates and determining their growth in 70 different environments. While the collection contains numerous isolates with the potential to assimilate several cost-effective and sustainable carbon and nitrogen sources, we focused on characterizing the 203 strains capable of growing on lactose, the main carbon source in the abundant side stream cheese whey from dairy industries.

Human skin plays an important role protecting the body from both extrinsic and intrinsic factors. Skin aging at cellular level, which is a consequence of accumulation of irreparable senescent keratinocytes is associated with chronological aging. However, cell senescence may occur independent of chronological aging and it may be accelerated by various pathological conditions.
