The combined effect of ethonium and 5 antibiotics belonging to different groups was studied with 30 clinical strains of P. aeruginosa. A 2--8-fold increase in the activity of kanamycin and tetracycline against some strains was observed. The MIC of carbenicillin, polymycin M and cefotaxime was lowered by 2--6 times and with respect to some strains by 16--32 times. The detergent is recommended to be used in combination with some antibiotics in treatment of infections caused by resistant strains of P. aeruginosa.

The actuality of the problem is conditioned by the persistence of residual inflammations in a significant number of the patients with urogenital infections after the completion of the etiotropic therapy. The main goal of the study was to develop a method for the treatment of post-gonorrheal and post-chlamydial colpitis, colpomycosis, endocervicitis and urethritis by local application of Ligenten, a gel containing gentamicin, ethonium and lidocaine (as an anesthetic). The trial included 28 females at the age of 20 to 58 years with residual inflammations in the urogenital organs after the completion of the antimicrobial therapy of the urogenital infections.

The hydrogel sodium carboxymethylcellulose in combination with polyvinylpyrrolidone is used as the ligenten base. The clinical trials in urologic and gynecologic patients showed that ligenten had a high therapeutic efficacy in the treatment of inflammatory diseases, as well as an anesthetic action in instrumental examinations and surgical endoscopic manipulations.

A clinical trial was made of a new gel ligenten intended for local urethral anesthesia and treatment of infection and inflammation in the lower urinary tracts. Ligenten was given to 52 patients to manage bladder, prostate, urethral infection and inflammation, for local prophylaxis before cystoscopy, urethral bouginage and transurethral surgery. Apparent advantages of intraurethral introduction of the analgetic compared to instrument lubrication are demonstrated.
