Three prototype anthropomorphic breast phantoms are discussed. The phantoms were constructed using ultrasonically tissue-mimicking materials; these materials mimic various tissue parenchymae in terms of attenuation, speed of sound, density, and scatter level. Realistic artifacts related to refraction and reflection at interfaces between different simulated parenchymae are produced. The phantoms represent premenopausal breasts, and they complement one another. Two of them represent the dense breasts of women under 30 years of age, and one represents that of a woman between 35 and 40 years of age. Of the former two, one produces what is apparently above-average refraction effects in the region of the peripheral fat layer; the other produces more typical refraction effects. Simulated tumors, cysts, and calcifications of various sizes are suspended in the glandular regions. Such phantoms are valuable for use in developmental testing of state-of-the-art ultrasound machines, quality assurance testing of clinical machines, and training of sonographers in breast imaging.

Purpose: Contrast-enhanced digital breast tomosynthesis (CEDBT) highlights breast tumors with neo-angiogenesis. A recently proposed CEDBT system with a dual-layer (DL) flat-panel detector enables simultaneous acquisition of high-energy (HE) and low-energy (LE) projection images with a single exposure, which reduces acquisition time and eliminates motion artifacts. However, x-ray scatter degrades image quality and lesion detectability.

Myocardial perfusion imaging using single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), or myocardial perfusion SPECT (MPS) is a widely used clinical imaging modality for the diagnosis of coronary artery disease. Current clinical protocols for acquiring and reconstructing MPS images are similar for most patients. However, for patients with outlier anatomical characteristics, such as large breasts, images acquired using conventional protocols are often sub-optimal in quality, leading to degraded diagnostic accuracy.

(1) Background: 3D printable materials with accurately defined iodine content enable the development and production of radiological phantoms that simulate human tissues, including lesions after contrast administration in medical imaging with X-rays. These phantoms provide accurate, stable and reproducible models with defined iodine concentrations, and 3D printing allows maximum flexibility and minimal development and production time, allowing the simulation of anatomically correct anthropomorphic replication of lesions and the production of calibration and QA standards in a typical medical research facility. (2) Methods: Standard printing resins were doped with an iodine contrast agent and printed using a consumer 3D printer, both (resins and printer) available from major online marketplaces, to produce printed specimens with iodine contents ranging from 0 to 3.

Background And Purpose: Transit-Guided Radiation Therapy (TGRT) is a novel technique that uses the transit portal images (TPIs) acquired with Electronic Portal Image Devices (EPID) to quantify patient position errors during the treatment. It has been validated using anthropomorphic phantoms but a validation in a clinical setting was lacking. A pilot clinical study is presented to confirm our previous results.
