1% beta-alanine and alpha-L-alanine, when given for 7 days as the only drinking fluid, inhibited the exploratory activity of adult male spontaneously-hypertensive rats (SHR) but not that of the normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKR). beta-Alanine decreased the taurine level in the liver of both strains and in the platelets of SHR. alpha-Alanine decreased the taurine level in the liver of WKR and in the platelets of SHR.

The complex formation of uracil and cytosine with glycyl-L-glutamic acid (β-endorphin 30-31), γ-L-glutamyl-L-cysteinyl-glycine (glutathione reduced), α-L-alanyl-L-tyrosine, and α-L-alanyl-α-L-alanine in a buffered saline has been studied using dissolution calorimetry. The values of the reaction constant, the change in Gibbs energy, enthalpy, and entropy were obtained. It is shown that the ratio of the enthalpy and entropy factors depends on the charge of the peptide ion, and the number of H-bond acceptors in the peptide structure.

In this study the absorption of glycine, α-alanine and β-alanine amino acids into the pores of the synthetic zeolite Na-mordenite was investigated with the aim of: (i) evaluating the effectiveness of the MOR framework type in amino acid adsorption ( vapor and aqueous loading); (ii) understanding the host-guest and guest-guest interactions to possibly design a tailor made material and a loading procedure able to maximize the amino acid adsorption; (iii) studying the effect of pressure on the adsorbed amino acids such as, for instance, possible amino acid condensation. The structural characterization, carried out with the combination of diffractometric and infrared spectroscopy analyses, shows that MOR can adsorb amino acids, which are found both in protonated/deprotonated (possibly also generating zwitterions) form. Vapor loading is ineffective for α-alanine, while it is effective in β-alanine and glycine adsorption, even if using different loading degrees.

Sarcosine, N-methyl glycine, could be used as a biomarker for the diagnosis of prostate cancer. It exists in biosamples at low levels; therefore, sensitive methods are necessary for its detection. In this study, we developed a sensitive and selective method for the analysis of sarcosine, based on derivatizing sarcosine with a fluorescent reagent levofloxacin acyl chloride.

Infrared vibrational spectra were collected along with the vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectra for the zwitterions alpha-D-alanine, alpha-L-alanine, alpha-D-mannose and alpha-L-mannose as potassium bromide (KBr) pressed samples. VCD for D- and L-alanine dissolved in water was also measured and compared against the spectra resulting from KBr pressed samples. The experimental data were compared against the ab initio B3LYP/6-31G* optimized geometry.
