To assess the relationship of donor alanine aminotransferase (ALT) level to recipient hepatitis, 283 transfused patients were prospectively followed up after open heart surgery; hepatitis developed in 12.7%, of which 97% was non-A, non-B. The ALT tests of 3,359 donors to these patients indicated that risk of hepatitis was significantly associated with the level of donor ALT; 29% of 52 patients receiving at least 1 unit of blood with an ALT level greater than 53 IU/L had hepatitis develop (20.7 cases per 1,000 units), compared with 9% of 231 recipients of only blood with an ALT level of 53 IU/L or less (7.8 cases per 1,000 units). Calculation of corrected efficacy predicts that, at an exclusion level equivalent to 2.25 SDs above the mean log for normal subjects, ALT testing of donors could prevent 29% of posttransfusion hepatitis at the loss of 1.6% of donor units.

Aflatoxin B (AFB), a potent mycotoxin, poses a significant threat to the poultry industry, particularly affecting the health and growth of ducklings. The present study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effects and mechanisms of the Tianjihuang compound (HRS), a traditional Chinese medicine formulation, on AFB-induced chronic toxicity in ducklings. Firstly, 30 ingredients, including neochlorogenic acid, kaempferol 3-alpha-D-galactoside, quercetin, hispidulin, caffeic acid, and myricetin, were identified from HRS with UPLC-MS/MS method.

Food allergy has had a rapid rise in prevalence, and thus it is important to identify approaches to limit the development of food allergy early in life. Because maternal dietary supplementation with α-tocopherol (α-T), an isoform of vitamin E, during pregnancy and nursing increases neonate plasma levels of α-T and can limit neonate development of other allergies, we hypothesized that α-T can limit development of food allergy. Background: Although therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) maintains serum teicoplanin (TEIC) concentration between 15 and 30 μg/mL, TEIC-induced liver injury may still occur. The albumin-bilirubin (ALBI)-fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) score may be useful for predicting TEIC-induced liver injury in patients undergoing TDM.
Objective: This pilot study aimed to investigate whether the ALBI-FIB4 score can predict TEIC-induced abnormal liver enzyme levels in patients undergoing TDM.
