Supplying critical metals such as cobalt, lithium, and nickel, to achieve sustainable development goals will be one of the most important concerns in the coming decades. A significant challenge in this area is the separation of some similar elements, such as nickel and cobalt. This study proposes a novel and eco-friendly process to selectively recover cobalt from nickel and manganese.

Soybeans are a widely consumed legume, essential in Western diets and especially prominent in vegan and vegetarian nutrition. However, environmental contamination from anthropogenic sources, such as industrial emissions, wastewater, and pesticide use, has led to the accumulation of non-essential and toxic elements in legumes, potentially impacting human health. This study quantified the levels of 11 potential toxic elements (Al, B, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Li, Ni, Pb, Sr, V) in 90 samples of four soybean species (, , , ) using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES).

Terahertz (THZ) spectroscopy has emerged as a superior label-free sensing technology in the detection, identification, and quantification of biomolecules in various biological samples. However, the limitations in identification and discrimination sensitivity of current methods impede the wider adoption of this technology. In this article, a meticulously designed metasurface is proposed for molecular fingerprint enhancement, consisting of a periodic array of lithium tantalate triangular prism tetramers arranged in a square quartz lattice.

Article Synopsis
  • Lithium-ion portable batteries contain valuable metals like cobalt, nickel, lithium, and others that can be extracted using innovative solvents like choline chloride-based Deep Eutectic Solvents (DESs) and bi-functional ionic liquids (ILs).
  • The study tested various DESs in combination with organic acids and additives to optimize metal extraction, finding the most effective method with DES 2 mixed with glycine and hydrogen peroxide.
  • Results showed that using DESs provided significantly better extraction efficiency (up to 100% for certain metals) compared to bi-functional ILs, suggesting a more effective approach for recovering metals from battery waste.

Emerging evidence indicates that arginine methylation promotes the stability of arginine-glycine-rich (RGG) motif-containing RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) and regulates gene expression. Here, we report that post-translational modification of FXR1 enhances the binding with mRNAs and is involved in cancer cell growth and proliferation. Independent point mutations in arginine residues of FXR1's nuclear export signal (R386 and R388) and RGG (R453, R455 and R459) domains prevent it from binding to RNAs that form G-quadruplex (G4) RNA structures.
