Article Abstract

The components of the peripheral white blood cells (WBC) were determined before and after 10 min of submaximal ergometric work in two groups of subjects: 34 healthy Yemenite Jews with benign familial leukopenia (BFL) and 34 healthy Yemenite Jews without BFL. The mean +/- SEM of the increase in the peripheral WBC following the effort in the control group was 2,606 +/- 1,272 cells/mm3, due to the relative rise in the neutrophils, eosinophils, monocytes and lymphocytes. The identical ergometric work, performed by BFL subjects, brought about significantly lower increase (700 +/- 865 cells/mm3) in the peripheral WBC, the majority of which were lymphocytes. It seems that subjects with this form of BFL lack granulocytes in the marginal pool.

Background: There is limited and conflicting evidence on the comparative cardiometabolic safety and effectiveness of aripiprazole in the management of severe mental illness. We investigated the hypothesis that aripiprazole has a favourable cardiometabolic profile, but similar effectiveness when compared to olanzapine, quetiapine, and risperidone.

Methods And Findings: We conducted an observational emulation of a head-to-head trial of aripiprazole versus olanzapine, quetiapine, and risperidone in UK primary care using data from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink.

Objective: This study aimed to develop and validate a nomogram to predict the risk of sepsis in non-traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) patients using data from the MIMIC-IV database.

Methods: A total of 803 SAH patients meeting the inclusion criteria were randomly divided into a training set (563 cases) and a validation set (240 cases). Independent prognostic factors were identified through forward stepwise logistic regression, and a nomogram was created based on these factors.

Distribution of opioid analgesics by community racial/ethnic and socioeconomic profiles, 2011-2021.

Pain

January 2025

Department of Population Health Sciences, Weill Cornell Medicine, New York, NY, United States.

Rapid declines in opioid analgesics dispensed in American communities since 2011 raise concerns about inadequate access to effective pain management among patients for whom opioid therapies are appropriate, especially for those living in racial/ethnic minority and socioeconomically deprived communities. Using 2011 to 2021 national data from the Automated Reports and Consolidated Ordering System and generalized linear models, this study examined quarterly per capita distribution of oxycodone, hydrocodone, and morphine (in oral morphine milligram equivalents [MMEs]) by communities' racial/ethnic and socioeconomic profiles. Communities (defined by 3-digit-zip codes areas) were classified as "majority White" (≥50% self-reported non-Hispanic White population) vs "majority non-White.

Cocaine and aortic dissection: the need for collaboration to overcome the underreporting bias.

Forensic Sci Med Pathol

January 2025

Department of Advanced Biomedical Sciences, School of Medicine, University of Naples Federico II, Via S. Pansini, 5, Naples, 80131, Italy.

The dissection of the aorta is a serious and potentially fatal consequence of cocaine use. Nonetheless, the underlying mechanisms and characteristics of this phenomenon remain to be deeply studied. The autopsy case of a 46-year-old white male found irresponsive and unconscious in his house and had a history of abusing cocaine is presented.

Leukemia is a prevalent cancer that severely affects children, and standard chemotherapy often leads to severe gastrointestinal symptoms and neutropenia. This study aimed to discover alternative treatments to prevent neutropenia in pediatric leukemia patients and minimize chemotherapy-related complications. This randomized, placebo-controlled trial was conducted on 52 children between the ages of 3 and 18 years who were suffering from acute leukemia and undergoing chemotherapy.
