Introduction: Early assessment of a therapeutic response is a central goal in antidepressant treatment. The present study examined the potential for therapeutic drug monitoring and symptom rating to predict venlafaxine treatment efficacy (measured by overall patient response and remission).
Methods: 88 patients were uptitrated homogenously to 225 mg/day venlafaxine.

Aims: This prospective pilot-study was performed to assess whether regular moderate physical activity elevates the parasympathetic tone to the atrio-ventricular node and decreases VR during permanent AF.
Background: Adequate ventricular rate (VR) control in patients with permanent atrial fibrillation (AF) is not easy to accomplish.
Methods: 10 patients (mean age 59 +/- 10 years) with permanent AF (duration: 10 +/- 8 years) underwent moderate physical exercise adjusted to their individual physical capability (45 min walking/jogging twice a week).

In the light of the heterogeneous literature on disturbances of body image in schizophrenic patients, we examined body schema, body concept and body cathexis, their changes during hospital treatment and their correlations with psychopathology in 38 patients with acute paranoid schizophrenia. The image-marking method according to Askevold, the Body Distortion Questionnaire, a visual-analogue scale on body cathexis and psychopathometric scales were applied. Body schema was also investigated in 27 healthy controls.

A decrease in pain sensitivity during acute depression has been observed in several studies, apparently related to the severity of symptomatology. However, the question remains whether this relationship can be found only in heterogeneous groups of depressive patients or also in a single diagnostic group, such as major depression. In the present study, pain thresholds were assessed in 20 patients with major depression (DSM-III-R) and in 20 healthy controls.
