A single strain (8021) of Neisseria meningitidis, isolated from a child with disseminated meningococcal disease, was found to elaborate two serogroup-specific capsular polysaccharides-Y and W135. The original isolate as well as the progeny of ten single colony sub-isolates each agglutinated with both group Y and group W135 serogrouping antisera. The capsular polysccharide of strain 8021 contained the chemical constituents of both the W135 and Y capsular polysaccharides in a ratio of about 2.5:1. The patient responded immunologically to both capsular polysaccharides with haemagglutinating antibodies. Analysis by double diffusion in agar revealed that the capsular polysaccharide of strain 8021 contained individual molecules of group W135 and group Y capsular polysaccharides as well as a mosaic molecule containing both antigenic determinants.

The Group ACYW135 meningococcal polysaccharide vaccine (MPV-ACYW135) is a classical common vaccine used to prevent serogroups A, C, Y, and W135, but studies on the vaccine at the transcriptional level are still limited. In the present study, mRNAs and lncRNAs related to immunity were screened from the spleens of mice inoculated with MPV-ACYW135 and compared with the control group to identify differentially expressed mRNAs and lncRNAs in the immune response. The result revealed 34375 lncRNAs and 41321 mRNAs, including 405 differentially expressed (DE) lncRNAs and 52 DE mRNAs between the MPV group and the control group.

In order to investigate carriage status and serum groups distribution of Neisseria meningitidis(Nm) among healthy population in Jiangsu Province, four counties were selected as monitoring sites by random sampling method for cross-sectional study. Throat swab specimens were collected from four monitoring sites in October to November 2019 and November to December 2020 for bacterial culture and Real-time PCR detection. Chi-square test was used to compare the positive rate of Neisseria meningitidis, and multiple logistic regression model was used to analyze the influencing factors of Neisseria meningitidis carrier rate.

In the MORDOR I trial, children under 5 years of age were randomized to receive biannual (every 6 months) azithromycin for 2 years in Niger, Malawi, and Tanzania. In 30 Nigerien communities, children aged 7-11 years, who were not enrolled in the MORDOR I trial to receive biannual azithromycin, were assessed for carriage of seven respiratory pathogens. We aimed to see whether there were effects on the carriage of these seven respiratory pathogens among 3,187 children aged 7-11 years living in the 30 communities via nasopharyngeal swabs collected at baseline (N = 1,066), as well as at year 1 (N = 1,019) and year 2 (N = 1,102)-each about 6 months after azithromycin or placebo treatment of children under age five.

High rates of vaccination coverage in childhood represent one of the most important cost-effective tools of primary prevention and have substantially reduced the incidence of and mortality from vaccine-preventable diseases globally. Vaccination coverage of young people has not been well estimated in Greece. Anonymous self-completed questionnaires and the participants’ Child Health Booklet were used to estimate complete vaccination coverage of mandatory vaccinations against vaccine-preventable diseases of undergraduate students at the University of West Attica during the academic year 2020−2021.
