The inadequate thermal insulation of the building envelope contributes significantly to the high power consumption of air conditioners in houses. A crucial factor in raising a building's energy efficiency involves utilizing bricks with high thermal resistance. This issue is accompanied by another critical challenge: recycling and disposing of waste in a way that is both economically and environmentally beneficial, including using it to fuel industrial growth, in order to reduce the harmful effects of waste on the environment as waste generation in our societies grows.

Adaptive Phase Change Microcapsules for Efficient Sustainable Cooling.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

January 2025

School of Artificial Intelligence Science and Technology, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, Shanghai 200093, China.

Passive radiative cooling has recently gained significant attention as a highly promising technology that offers a zero-energy and electricity-free solution to tackle the pressing issue of global warming. Nevertheless, research efforts have predominantly focused on enhancing daytime and hot-day radiative cooling efficacy, often neglecting the potential downsides associated with excessive cooling and the consequent increased heating expenses during cold nights and winter days. Herein, we demonstrate a micro-nanostructured engineered composite film that synergistically integrates room-temperature adaptive silica-shell/oil-core phase change microcapsules (S-PCMs) with commercially available cellulose fibers.

This study investigated the single and combined effects of environmental heat stress and physical exercise on executive function (EF) performance, prefrontal cortex oxygenation, thermoregulatory responses and subjective perceptions. Sixteen subjects participated in four experimental sessions: two under moderate environmental conditions (23 °C), with and without physical exercise (R23, E23), and two under hot environmental conditions (35 °C), with and without physical exercise (R35, E35). In each session, participants completed EF tasks before and after 1 h of passive rest or 45 min of moderate-intensity cycling followed by 15 min of rest.

Enrichment of GABA content in brown rice through heating and humidifying treatment: Quantification via TLC-ImageJ method.

Food Chem

January 2025

School of Food and Biological Engineering, Jiangsu University, Zhenjiang, Jiangsu 212013, China. Electronic address:

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a functional food ingredient for human health. This study aimed to investigate the enrichment and migration rule of GABA in rice by heating and humidifying treatment (HHT). The thin layer chromatography-ImageJ method (TLC-ImageJ) was developed for determining GABA.

Capacitive-based radiofrequency (Rf) radiation at 27 MHz offers a non-invasive approach for inducing hyperthermia, making it a promising technique for thermal cancer therapy applications. To achieve focused and site-specific hyperthermia, external material is required that efficiently convert Rf radiation into localized heat. Nanomaterials capable of absorbing Rf energy and convert into heat for targeted ablation are of critical importance.
