The DKI vertical pipette puller (Model 700 C), which is normally used to make single or multi-barrel glass pipettes out of prepulled blanks, can be modified for the construction of a variety of multi-barrel pipettes. The use of the modified pipette puller is described for the production of small diameter 4-barrel pipettes.

Studies on taste bud cells and brain stem relay nuclei suggest that alternative pathways convey information regarding different taste qualities. Building on the hypothesis that amiloride (epithelial Na channel antagonist)-sensitive neurons respond to palatable salt (low-concentration) and amiloride-insensitive neurons respond to aversive salt (high-concentration), we investigated the histological distribution of taste-sensitive neurons in the rostral nucleus of the solitary tract in rats and their NaCl and amiloride sensitivities. We recorded neuronal activity in extracellular single units using multi-barrel glass micropipettes and reconstructed their locations on the rostrocaudal and mediolateral axes.

gamma-Aminobutric acid (GABA) is one of the main inhibitory transmitters in the central nervous system. In a recent study we have demonstrated differential effects of two iontophoretically applied GABA(A)-blockers, bicuculline (BIC) and gabazine (SR 95531), on neuronal responses in primary auditory cortex (AI): Whereas the only effect of gabazine was to block GABA(A)-mediated inhibition, BIC application additionally induced dose-dependent side effects, probably on calcium-dependent potassium channels. Here we investigated the effects of the two drugs on pure tone-evoked local field potentials (LFPs) in AI.

1. The superficial grey layer of the superior colliculus (SGS) contains a high proportion of GABAergic inhibitory neurones. We have investigated the role of GABA receptors in synaptic transmission of aspects of visual activity in the SGS that may be driven by inhibitory mechanisms, such as surround inhibition and response habituation.

Studies were performed on the correlation between the hypothalamic temperature-sensitive neurons and hypothalamic neurons sensitive to LHRH, TRH, conjugated estrogen and clomiphene in 103 castrated matured female rats by the technique of microiontophoresis using a multi-barrel glass microelectrode. Out of 348 neurons in the hypothalamus, 24 neurons were found to be LHRH-sensitive, 20 TRH-sensitive, 41 estrogen-sensitive, and 18 clomiphene-sensitive. There were 19(28.
