The influence of calcium ionophores--tenoyltrifluoroacetate (TTFA) and divaleryldibenzo-18-crown-6(divaleryl) on the glucose consumption, D-xylose transport and glycogen content in rat diaphragm was studied. TTFA caused a clear dose-dependent inhibition of carbohydrate transport and glycogenolysis stimulation. Divaleryl, on the other hand, raised glucose consumption, D-xylose transport without influencing glycogen content. Exclusion of Ca++ from incubation medium increased the TTFA inhibiting effect on glucose consumption, decreased its glycogenolytic effect and removed divaleryl induced stimulation of glucose transport. Mechanisms of calcium ionophore action and a possible role of intracellular Ca2+ in carbohydrate transport are discussed.

Purpose: To determine the relationship between self-reported physical activity and the components of premorbid metabolic syndrome in patients treated in primary care according to sex.
Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study conducted on a sample of 2,359 patients without cardiovascular disease or diabetes, included in the cohort of the IBERICAN study. Using ANOVA models and adjusting for age, economic status, employment situation, level of education, adherence to a Mediterranean diet, tobacco use and alcohol consumption, we estimated the association of the variables blood pressure, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, blood glucose and waist circumference with the self-reported level of physical activity (sedentary, moderate, high, very high).

The Respiratory Exchange Ratio (RER), which is the ratio of total carbon dioxide produced over total oxygen consumed, serves as a qualitative measure to determine the substrate usage of a particular organism on the whole-body level. Quantification of RER by its direct conversion into %Glucose (%G) and %Lipid oxidation (%L) at a given timepoint can be done by utilizing nonprotein respiratory quotient tables. These tables, however, are limited to specific increments, and intermediate RER values are not covered by these tables.
