MUC1 and glycan probing of CA19-9 captured biomarkers from cyst fluids and serum provides enhanced recognition of ovarian cancer.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Department of Life Technologies, Division of Biotechnology, University of Turku, Medisiina D, 5th floor, Kiinamyllynkatu 10, 20520, Turku, Finland.

Glycosylation changes of circulating proteins carrying the CA19-9 antigen may offer new targets for detection methods to be explored for the diagnosis of epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). Search for assay designs for targets initially captured by a CA19-9 antigen reactive antibody from human body fluids by probing with fluorescent nanoparticles coated with lectins or antibodies to known EOC associated proteins. CA19-9 antigens were immobilized from ascites fluids, ovarian cyst fluids or serum samples using monoclonal antibody C192 followed by probing of carrier proteins using anti-MUC16, anti-MUC1 and, anti STn antibodies and seven lectins, all separately coated on nanoparticles.

Novel Ultrafiltration Polyethersulfone Membranes Blended with Carrageenan.

Polymers (Basel)

January 2025

Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute, Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Qatar Foundation, Doha P.O. Box 34110, Qatar.

The development of ultrafiltration (UF) polymeric membranes with high flux and enhanced antifouling properties bridges a critical gap in the polymeric membrane fabrication research field. In the present work, the preparation of novel PES membranes incorporated with carrageenan (CAR), which is a natural polymer derived from edible red seaweed, is reported for the first time. The PES/CAR membranes were prepared by using the nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) method at 0.

Transvaginal ultrasound-guided follicle aspiration (TVA) is being performed frequently in equine practice, to recover oocytes for in vitro embryo production via intracytoplasmic sperm injection. While complications from TVA are rare, one of the most prevalent major complications is formation of an ovarian abscess, which can result in the necessity for euthanasia. The acute-phase serum proteins, fibrinogen and serum amyloid A (SAA) are markers of inflammation that might be of use in diagnosis of ovarian abscess.

Decreased serum PF4 levels correlate with cognitive decline and CSF biomarkers in Alzheimer's disease in a Chinese cohort.

Exp Gerontol

January 2025

Department of Neurology and Center for Clinical Neuroscience, Daping Hospital, Third Military Medical University, Chongqing 400042, China.

Background: Platelet factor 4 (PF4), a chemotactic factor secreted from the α-granules of platelets, has recently been proved to mitigate neuroinflammation and improve aging-related cognition decline, which may be involved in Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Objective: This study aims to investigate the alterations of serum PF4 levels in AD, the correlation between serum PF4 and β-amyloid (Aβ) and tau levels in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and the potential diagnostic utility of PF4 in AD.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 38 amyloid-positive AD patients and 50 cognitively normal controls.

Acute Effects of a Single Bout of Strength and Endurance Exercise on Vitamin D Metabolites in Young Adults.

Med Sci Sports Exerc

January 2025

Department of Circulation and Medical Imaging, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, NTNU, Trondheim, NORWAY.

Purpose: The effect of exercise on serum concentration of vitamin D metabolites remains inconclusive, with studies reporting deviating results. This study evaluated the acute effect of a single session of two specific exercise forms; strength training (ST) and high-intensity interval training (HIIT), on circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D), free25(OH)D and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25(OH)2D), and skeletal muscle vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene expression, in healthy adults.

Methods: Thirty-nine participants (19 women and 20 men, age 21-30 years) completed a single bout of ST and HIIT exercise, separated by two weeks.
