Ingestion rate of granulocytes in osteomyelofibrosis with splenomegaly, which is still a matter of controversy, was measured in 32 patients. The mean ingestion rate in patients' granulocytes was similar to that of the controls; the results, however, were more dispersed in the patients than in the controls, with very high (three patients) and very low (three patients) ingestion rates. Ingestion alterations were serum-independent. Neutrophil glycolytic enzymes and adenylate-kinase were measured in order to assess: (1) if they could be responsible for the observed abnormalities and (2) if enzyme abnormalities, previously described in red blood cells, also occur in the neutrophils. Major increases in phosphofructoaldolase and in 3-phosphoglycerate kinase activities, contrasting with a decrease in pyruvate kinase activity were observed. These, however, did not correlate with ingestion alterations. In conclusion, we showed that the granulocyte ingestion rate is altered in a few patients only, that the alterations are unrelated to the serum, to adenylate kinase or to glycolytic enzyme abnormalities. The latter, however, are important. The mechanisms of their occurrence are unknown and hypotheses such as those proposed for red blood cells enzyme modifications in myeloproliferative disorders could be applicable.

Background: Obesity rates among Saudi adolescents are increasing, with regional variations highlighting the need for tailored interventions. School-based health programs in Saudi Arabia are limited and often emphasize weight and body size, potentially exacerbating body image dissatisfaction. There is limited knowledge on the feasibility of non-weight-centric educational programs in Saudi Arabia and their effects on health behaviors and body image.

Plasma nitrate (NO) and nitrite (NO) increase in a dose-dependent manner following NO ingestion. To explore if the same dose-response relationship applies to other nitric oxide (NO) congeners in different blood compartments and skeletal muscle, as well as the subsequent physiological responses, we provided 11 healthy participants with NO depleted beetroot juice (placebo), and beetroot juice (BR) containing 6.4, 12.

Cell models emulating an in vitro parasitic infection can greatly improve our understanding of helminthiases. Nonetheless, it remains challenging to select an appropriate in vitro model to study molecular pathogenesis of infections by trematodes having a complex life cycle. Therefore, adequate models are in high demand.

Introduction: Elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor (ETI) has shown significant improvements in pulmonary and nutritional status in persons with cystic fibrosis (pwCF). Less is known about the extrapulmonary impact of ETI and effects on airway microbiology, lung clearance index (LCI) and fraction of exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO).

Methods: A multicentre prospective observational trial, including 79 pwCF ≥ 18 years eligible for ETI.

Microplastics, particles between 0.001 and 5 mm in diameter, are ubiquitous in the environment and their consumption by aquatic organisms is known to lead to a variety of adverse effects. However, studies on the effects of microplastics on prey fish have not shown consistent trends, with results varying across species and plastic type used.
