Purpose: The purpose is to evaluate the effect of drainage from intentional extramacular holes after internal limiting membrane insertion to treat macular hole retinal detachment (MHRD) in highly myopic eyes.

Methods: This study is a retrospective, observational, and comparative case series that included 25 consecutive highly myopic eyes with MHRD. All eyes underwent standard 23-gauge vitrectomy, inverted internal limiting membrane insertion into the macular hole, subretinal fluid drainage from an intentionally created extramacular retinal hole, and tamponade with either silicone oil (SO group, n = 13) or perfluoropropane (CF group, n = 12).

Assessment of retinal pigment epithelium tears in eyes with submacular hemorrhage secondary to age-related macular degeneration.

Sci Rep

Department of Ophthalmology, Graduate School of Medicine and Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Toyama, 2630 Sugitani, Toyama, 930-0194, Japan.

To assess retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) tears in eyes which underwent pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) for submacular hemorrhage (SMH) secondary to age-related macular degeneration and to investigate the prognostic factors of visual outcomes. This study was a retrospective, observational case series that included 24 eyes of 24 patients who underwent PPV with subretinal tissue plasminogen activator and air for SMH. RPE tears were investigated using spectral-domain or swept-source optical coherence tomography images with raster scan, combined confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscope near-infrared images and color fundus photographs.

Purpose: Human amniotic membrane (hAM) grafts have been used to close persistent macular holes in recent years. The results from these surgeries are promising with improved closure rate and vision. However, there is lack of data for what happens to these membranes and how long the tissue should remain inside the patient's eyes.

Retinal graft dislocation managed by repeat autologous retinal transplant for refractory macular hole.

BMJ Case Rep

Smt. Kanuri Santhamma Centre for Vitreo Retinal Diseases, Anant Bajaj Retina Institute, LV Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad, Telangana, India

A septuagenarian man presented with a visual acuity of hand motions and a large refractory macular hole (MH). We performed an autologous retinal transplant (ART) and covered the graft with fibrin glue without any endotamponade. The autograft was found to have dislocated from the MH when the patient was reviewed 1 week later.

Purpose: This study evaluates the effectiveness of the inverted internal limiting membrane (ILM) flap technique during vitrectomy for treating macular hole-induced retinal detachment (MHRD) in high myopia patients, a challenging complication for vitreoretinal surgeons due to its treatment complexity.

Methods: We conducted a prospective study analyzing 92 eyes diagnosed with MHRD, all undergoing vitrectomy using the inverted ILM flap technique between February 2022 and September 2024. Successful surgery was defined as achieving retinal reattachment, macular hole closure, and improvement in visual acuity by the 12-month postoperative follow-up.
