Comfort is a central aspect of palliative care, encompassing the management of pain and symptoms, as well as how people feel and experience care. Comfort has been argued to be especially tenuous or transient in palliative care, as a constantly shifting set of bodily sensations and relations are anticipated and cared for. In this article, drawing on in-depth interviews and photo elicitation, we explore the accounts of patients, family carers, staff and volunteers from a palliative care service in Australia, to understand how care is configured and facilitated through everyday gestures of comfort.

We report a computational study of the gas-phase and water-mediated mechanisms for the oxidation of carbonyl sulfide (OCS) by the hydroxyl radical. To achieve reliable results, we employ a dual-level strategy within interpolated single-point energies (VTST-ISPE) at the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ//M06-2X/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory. In the gas-phase mechanism, we have determined the rate constants by kinetic Monte Carlo simulation in the interval of temperatures of 250-550 K.

Purpose: This study compared the performance of the new LigaSure™ XP Maryland Jaw Sealer/Divider (XP Maryland) to that of LigaSure Atlas™ (Atlas) and LigaSure™ Dolphin Tip (Dolphin Tip), two early LigaSure™ (LigaSure) devices characterized by consistent and reliable clinical performance.
Methods: Ex vivo bench testing on porcine renal arteries compared burst pressures, seal times, and rates of sticking, incomplete cuts, and charring between XP Maryland and Atlas and between XP Maryland and Dolphin Tip. In vivo acute testing on a porcine model compared thermal spread, seal times, and rates of hemostasis, sticking, and incomplete cuts between XP Maryland and the two early LigaSure devices.

Strategies emphasizing animal-free innovation are imperative for the contemporary and future scientific research. They not only address important ethical concerns, but also should directly improve research accuracy and reliability through redirecting scientific inquiry toward more reliable and translatable methodologies. Promotion and encouragement for use of animal-free innovations among the next-generation of scientists, alongside knowledge acquisition and training in the increased capabilities of novel technologies, are fundamental for advancing science and the welfare of animals used for scientific purposes.

The degree of sulfonation (DS) is a key property of sulfonated polymers, as it significantly influences their swelling behaviour, conductivity and mechanical properties. Accurately determining the DS is essential for optimizing these materials for various applications. In this work, the DS of sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) was evaluated using a combination of analytical techniques, including titration, back titration, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), Ultra-Violet (UV) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (H NMR) spectroscopies, Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Rutherford backscattering (RBS) and particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) analysis.
