The 32P uptake test used in the differential diagnosis of 912 cases yielded an accuracy rate of 94.82% for intraocular lesions behind the equator, and 85.15% for lesions of the anterior uvea. The highest error rate occurred in patients with suspected tumors of the iris and ciliary body. It seems advisable to take a 40% difference on the uptake as the limit between a positive or negative test result.

Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is present in a healthy brain at low densities but can be markedly upregulated by excitatory input and by inflammogens. This study evaluated the sensitivity of the PET radioligand [C]-6-methoxy-2-(4-(methylsulfonyl)phenyl)--(thiophen-2-ylmethyl)pyrimidin-4-amine ([C]MC1) to detect COX-2 density in a healthy human brain. The specificity of [C]MC1 was confirmed using lipopolysaccharide-injected rats and transgenic mice expressing the human gene, with 120-min baseline and blocked scans using COX-1 and COX-2 selective agents.

The radioactive isotope of hydrogen, known as tritium (H), is very often used as a dating tool in hydrogeological studies, since it enters the water cycle as part of the water molecule through precipitation. However, the assessment of groundwater transit times and recharge often requires knowing the local historical records of tritium levels in precipitation during the previous seven decades, or the tritium in precipitation (TIP) time series. Here, we compiled all tritium records in precipitation in Greece, with the majority of stations showing sporadic measurements, with the aim of reconstructing a TIP for groundwater dating purposes.

Background: Radon, a radioactive gas, is a significant risk factor for lung cancer, especially in non-smokers. This study examines the expression of exosomal microRNAs (miRNAs) as potential biomarkers for radon-induced effects.

Methods: A total of 109 participants from high- and low-radon areas in Kazakhstan were included.

Radioactive contamination of southeast Abai oblast, Kazakhstan, from the Chinese nuclear weapons testing program at Lop Nor: an analytical review.

Between 1949 and 1962 the Soviet Union performed atmospheric tests of nuclear weapons at the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site (SNTS) in Kazakhstan, resulting in widespread contamination of the surrounding region with radioactive fallout. Settlements in the southeast Abai oblast of Kazakhstan, close to the border with China, are not thought to have received significant fallout from the SNTS. There is, however, evidence that the study area, including Makanchi, Urdzhar and Taskesken villages, was contaminated by atmospheric nuclear tests performed by China at the Lop Nor NTS between 1964 and 1980.

Measuring the radioactivity of organically bound tritium in environmental samples is difficult. For the past twenty years, many laboratories have been working on the development of reliable tritium measurement methods. In this context, several interlaboratory comparisons have been organised to develop these methods and enable laboratories to compare themselves.
