A chronic hepatic disorder of porphyrin metabolism was found in 36 workers with vinyl chloride (VC)-induced hepatic injury following long-time industrial exposure. Pathologic porphyrinuria, especially secondary coproporphyrinuria with transition to subclinical chronic hepatic porphyria, is a consistent pathobiochemical parameter for the recognition of VC hepatic lesions. The porphyrinuria is of diagnostic value for the incipient toxic phase. Erythrocyte uroporphyrinogen decarboxylase activity studied in six cases with initial chronic hepatic porphyria was normal, suggesting that VC affects only this enzyme in the liver.

Background: Tissue damage by viral hepatitis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Oxidation reactions and reactive oxygen species (ROS) transform proteins and lipids in plasma low-density lipoproteins (LDL) into the abnormal oxidized LDL (ox-LDL). Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection induces oxidative/nitrosative stress from multiple sources, including the inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), the mitochondrial electron transport chain, hepatocyte NAD(P)H oxidases (NOX enzymes), and inflammation.

Budd-Chiari Syndrome as an Initial Manifestation of Incomplete Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.

Eur J Case Rep Intern Med

December 2024

Department of Internal Medicine, Ospedale Regionale di Lugano EOC, Lugano, Switzerland.

Unlabelled: This article describes a case of a 26-year-old female with a history of Evan's syndrome who presented with severe exertional dyspnoea and abdominal discomfort. The patient was diagnosed with chronic Budd-Chiari syndrome, a rare vascular disorder characterized by obstruction of the hepatic vein. We discuss the risk factors, the clinical manifestations, and diagnostic methods for Budd-Chiari syndrome, as well as the possible association with an underlying incomplete systemic lupus erythematosus.

Direct Hepatic Vein Connection to Left Atrium Without Congenital Anomaly in Adult Heart Disease.

Ann Thorac Surg Short Rep

March 2023

Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Asan Medical Center, Seoul, Korea.

Anomalous hepatic venous connection without other cardiac anomalies is a rare condition but does not have high clinical significance. We describe a patient in whom a portion of the left hepatic vein was directly connected to the left atrium, without intracardiac or extracardiac anomalies. A left-to-right shunt with tricuspid regurgitation and atrial fibrillation occurred from right atrial volume overload.

Objective: This study aimed to assess the potential antifibrotic impact of zinc sulfate in chronic Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) patients receiving direct-acting antiviral therapy.

Methods: This randomized controlled study included 50 chronic HCV-infected patients with fibrosis stage (F1 & F2). Participants were randomly assigned to two groups: Group 1 (Control group, n = 25) received standard direct-acting antiviral therapy for 3 months, while Group 2 (Zinc group, n = 25) received 50 mg/day of zinc sulfate in addition to the standard direct-acting antiviral therapy for the same duration.
