An examination has been made of the wear surfaces of 21 ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene components of hip and knee joint prostheses removed from patients. Both light optics and scanning electron microscope systems of examination have been used. The appearances are compared with specimens subjected to two different in vitro wear tests. Surface appearances related to the wear experience have been classified into seven modes. At least four of these are evidences of what may be four different wear mechanisms. Entrapment of bone-cement particles between articulating surfaces is fundamentally extraneous but is seen to generate the most severe wear. In the absence of bone-cement particles, in vivo, wear seems to be mild. Wear in vitro produces similar surface modes but with different relative emphasis.

Purpose: To evaluate the role of contact lenses (CLs) in visual rehabilitation following keratoplasty.
Methods: Four databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase were systematically searched for studies published between January 2010 and July 2023. Visual outcomes, daily wearing duration, subjective comfort, rate and etiology of CL discontinuation, corneal endothelial cell density, central corneal thickness, and complications were extracted.

Among individuals who wear removable dentures, there is a significant likelihood, reaching up to 70 %, of experiencing a condition known as denture-induced stomatitis. To address this issue, a commonly used method involves soaking dentures in denture cleansers to eliminate microorganisms. However, the prolonged use of this cleaning method has resulted in the emergence of drug resistance.

Microplastics (MPs) are an emerging environmental concern, but studies on these contaminants, particularly in river ecosystems, remain scarce. Research has indicated that MPs in the environment are predominantly microfibers (MFs); however, a few studies suggest that the MFs encountered are chiefly of natural origin. In this study, we aimed to improve the understanding of MP/MFs (both plastic and natural), among microparticle (solid particles >10 μm to <5000 μm; mainly of plastic as well as natural origin) loads in the Tiber River, Italy, by analyzing the physicochemical properties of surface water and assessing the abundance and characteristics of MPs-MFs at three sites: Ponte Grillo, Aniene, and Magliana, along a 60 km stretch.

Background Recommendations regarding long-term postoperative activity are intended to prevent adverse events, but no common policy or best practice exists among ophthalmologists for pediatric patients. We surveyed ophthalmologists on their postoperative guidelines after the one-month postoperative period following childhood cataract and glaucoma surgeries. Methods A 28-question anonymous Qualtrics survey was distributed via listservs and social media.

Background: The risk of early revision of total hip arthroplasty (THA) for polyethylene wear is now low, but there remains a need to perform wear measurements in patients for clinical surveillance. The gold standard of wear measurements has been radiostereometric analysis (RSA), which has limited availability. The use of computed tomography (CT) to perform THA wear measurement was described a decade ago and found to have acceptable accuracy and precision, but high radiation dose was a concern.
