Peritoneal exudate was collected from rabbits 18 hr after ip injection of shellfish glycogen. The fluid was centrifuged and the peritoneal exudate supernatant (PES) retained for use in growth studies. The growth of Pasteurella multocida in PES was inhibited at 41 degrees C (febrile temperature for rabbits) as compared with 39 degrees C (afebrile temperature), suggesting the presence of an antibacterial agent active at febrile temperature. Further studies indicated that this antibacterial substance has a molecular weight less than 5000 Da. Heat treatment (70 degrees C, 1 hr) had no influence upon the activity of the inhibitory factor.

Purpose: Recurrent malignant ascites is a common and challenging condition in cancer patients, often lacking a standardized treatment protocol. Small-scale studies in the literature have been insufficient to establish a treatment standard. The aim of our study was to investigate the effectiveness and safety of pigtail peritoneal catheter application in the treatment of malignant ascites.

Pleural effusion as an initial presentation of malignancy poses significant diagnostic challenges, particularly when linked to gynecologic cancers. We discuss the case of a 53-year-old female who presented with progressive dyspnea and a massive right-sided pleural effusion. Cytological analysis of the pleural fluid revealed malignant cells and immunohistochemical staining confirmed high-grade serous carcinoma (HGSC) of ovarian origin.

Aim And Background: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of silymarin in improving liver function and reducing liver stiffness in chronic liver disease (CLD) patients. Silymarin, a hepatoprotective agent, has shown potential benefits in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and liver fibrosis, but evidence in CLD with varied etiologies remains limited. This study addresses the gap by assessing its impact across diverse etiological subgroups.

Abdominal hemorrhage and vascular fragility associated with neurofibromatosis type 1.

Jpn J Radiol

We report a case of recurrent abdominal bleeding associated with vascular fragility in a 67-year-old woman with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1). Computed tomography (CT) scan revealed hemorrhagic ascites and a pseudoaneurysm of the sigmoid colon artery, which was suspected to be the source of bleeding. Emergency laparotomy confirmed extremely fragile vessels, requiring repeated surgeries for recurrent bleeding.

POEMS syndrome (Polyneuropathy, Organomegaly, Endocrinopathy, Monoclonal Protein, Skin changes) is a syndrome that involves a monoclonal B-cell proliferation, most often plasmacytic, and a variable number of manifestations listed or not in the acronym. These manifestations include sclerotic bone lesions, plasmacytic Castleman disease, papillary edema, peripheral edema, ascites, thrombocytosis and/or polycythemia, venous and/or arterial thrombosis, and renal, pulmonary, and cardiac impairments . Diagnosis is often delayed due to the rarity of this entity and its clinical polymorphism, which can mimic other neurological disorders.
